Yes a nice Model 10 is worth $450. Glad to see vintage fixed sight .38 revolvers bringing the good money that they deserve. Anyone who has carried one as a LEO can attest to the fact that they are a reliable, trusted workhorses and if taken care of will likely be shooting far into the future. Pictured are two of mine purchased 8 years ago. The prices I paid are long gone!

Colt Official Police (1956)-local auction, $325 bid ($395 out the door-Tax, buyers premium, background fee.)

Model 10-7 (1979)-Nickel-collectors gun show - private sale - $300 cash. (seller had $400 on the tag).

They don't make them like they used to so if you want one better buy it now.

I think the price of 38 special is changing the market more towards 9mm around here for newer gun owners.
In W. NY model 19s start at $600. And go up to $1000. I’m talking run of the mill “used” 4” models. Sometimes I wonder if guys even want to sell their stuff.

The only gun store in my area with any used pre-lock Smiths for sale wants close to a grand for them. They also have a used Rossi for $550.

I can complain all I want, but I'm not going to find them any cheaper than that in my neck of the woods. Those of you who live where the guns are cheap and the girls are pretty are really lucky.

As the price of most things double ever 20-25 years from inflation. With valuable things rising even faster. $450 doesn't sound bad.

Given its condition, I think that particular Model 10-5 is over priced at $525.

In all fairness, S&W makes a model they call 10, but it ain’t that 10 . . .

That one could be a decent deal at $500 OTD, if you live in Florida and could go check it out in person.

Add on shipping and FFL fees just to get it in your hands then maybe have to pay them all over again if you determine it's not for acceptable, you would be better off looking for a common gun like that locally.

agreed, shipping and your FFL fee's would render the deal moot.

That looks like a 5" barrel. If so, those are hard to find. We don't see those around here.

I kinda like M10's and M&P's. Some years back I set about trying to get the assortment of barrel lengths commonly found on them.
Most of these were well under $300. Think I did pay the most, $450 for the M&P 2" SB, c.1954. It's nearly perfect. The 3" is a bit odd - although not 'lettered', a communication with S&W Historian Roy Jinks showed it shipped in 1958, and is not model-marked, so it's an M&P.
It came into an LGS I was working p/t at. A young man had inherited it and traded it in on a Glock. Boss/owner made me shell out $150 for it!

Anyway, some also-rans off to the left side - a Victory Model, c.1942 and an Hand Ejector (4th change?) 4" RB with near perfect large-medallion grips on it, c.1929 IIRC.
It was fun.

Heck, I bought this 18 months ago and paid $450 to get it to my house. Would do it again…..repeatedly…. today.
Finding a very nice M10-5 from the 70’s or earlier is not getting any cheaper. They should cost less than a M15 of the same vintage and condition and they are going up also.
In a couple of years it will be considered a good buy. If a person can find one he likes for a price he can afford buy it. Some of us can’t afford the more sought after models and there is nothing wrong with a M10.

I like M10s but would rather put out another buck or two and get a M14 or M15. The first 10 I had did impress me, shot 158 factory to print sights.

OK you have me convinced! I am heading out on vacation this week, but upon my return will go back to the shop and reexamine that model 10. I don’t recall what dash number it was. It was a standard weight barrel.
I have a couple of guns I have I won as prizes at shooting matches, nothing special, but will see if the shop is open to trading. I imagine a deal can be struck.

I'll have to tell SWMBO as I have 7 Model 10 revolvers and she complained when I bought them over 10 years ago.

The last show I went to I saw a 6 inch nickel 19-4 for $600 or $650 I forget. Took until the end of the day but it sold. The key is to get to the show in the first hour of opening. A lot of shows the dealers are already searching the floor before the doors open.

My partner Fredo Batali and I did gun shows some years back. We always walked the floor before the doors opened. Picked up some interesting stuff too. One I probably should have kept was a Colt Commando alloy frame revolver, parked finish on it. I think I owned that one for about an hour.....

Good catch on the barrel length, it completely slipped by me. A 5-inch Model 10 is worth more than the more common 4 inch versions.

Guess I lucked out! Picked up this No-Dash M-10 in 2019 off Armslist for $360. Gave another $75 to a member here for a period correct box. Shipped in 1960. Wish Armslist hadn't changed!

At 450, it would instantly be mine.
My LGS thinks that his NIB 10-6 is a $929 gun. Thing is, it's been in and out of the display case so many times in the last year or so, I doubt that it remains more than a 98% gun. He also thinks it's mid 60's but the non diamond grips say otherwise.

The gun could be priced at 300, and some here would refuse to buy it unless they could get it for 275.That's human nature for some.
Whenever I sell a gun or car or whatever, I price it very conservatively, probably too darn low most of the time, but the price is the price. No haggling. Don't like it, don't come to look at it...yet they still do, make their silly offers as if I'm desperate for the money, which certainly isn't the case. Nothing is less than I describe it as being. They wasted a trip and my time.

I bought my first .38 M&P for $65. I was making $2.50 an hour (big raise at the new job). That tracks pretty well with a $450 price today.

Yep - definitely worth $450. Here is my well worn 10-1. I would not part with it if I was offered $450.

There is one upside to Model 10s in good condition costing $500-ish:

They are worth it.

Just my opinion, of course, but I think any pre-lock S&W revolver in excellent condition, priced below $500, is a true bargain these days...

Well lookie what I found today... from a local gun shop that's closing down. 10-5, LNIB for $525. Maybe not the deal of the century to some of you folks but a great price for what sells around here.

dsk: that is an excellent price for that gun. And the gun looks to be in great condition. Nice pickup! Congrats!

Hello friends,

Just yesterday I went to the Miami Gun show. It’s a hit-or-miss kind of thing, but I have come across some nice guns on occasion.

One of the smaller, independent sellers had a beautiful model 10-7. No box, but the gun condition was amazing. The only wear to the bluing was the slightest turn mark on the cylinder. Not a rare gun, but so nice.

The tag on the gun said $450. I examined the gun, and complimented the seller on the condition. (I never bad mouth a gun I’m interested in.) Then I asked, “I’ve got cash and a concealed weapon license, what can you do for me as an out-the-door price?”

He said “let me see what I can do”, did a quick calculation, then “$425 out the door… how does THAT sound?” I told him it sounds like we have a deal.

All went smoothly, and both buyer and seller were happy.

The gun is probably from around 1982. I’ll be getting a shipping date from Mr. Jinks this week.

Best wishes everyone.

Roger AKA Mr. Wonderful

Apologies for a slight wander from the M10 topic -
I blundered into this at my local LGS last year - a M12, 4" RB.(an 'alloy frame M10') This LGS rarely has the kind of stuff that really interests me and like so many, there's a lot of black guns and poly-pistols in there. It went for $350, which I didn't feel too bad about.
It's one you don't see a lot of.

Most shows I help out in Pa, lady smiths and model 36s are the majority of fixed sight Smiths sold.

I think the price of 38 special is changing the market more towards 9mm around here for newer gun owners.
This. In spades. Trying to find .38 sp 158 gr for my 64 is almost impossible

I have already had a few M14&15’s along the way, and still have a couple. For some reason I am drawn to the simple fixed sight guns, all my current S&E’s have adjustable sights, and certainly “need” to fill that void.
Regarding ammo, while 38 is certainly more expensive and harder to find off the shelf than 9mm currently, I suspect almost all serious revolver fans reload anyway, so I don’t think that is much of a factor.

EVERYTHING is more expensive than 9mm nowadays. It's no reason not to enjoy other calibers just because they're not as cheap. Besides, you can only shoot 9mms so many times before they too get boring.

Anyway, I think now is the time to buy up any older pre-lock Smiths you find while there are still great deals to be had. I strongly sense the market is about to explode with these, especially with the resurgence in popularity of revolvers lately.

As many of our 'more mature' folks here may remember, .38 Spl. commercial reloads in WC and LSWC used to be a basic bread 'n butter LGS offering. The semi-exotic 9mm factory ammo 'in the back' was actually more expensive. And there were few JHP designs that would actually feed in the pistols of the era - IIRC, Browning HP's were some of the first that would feed JHP's with some regularity.
Yep, I'm sorta telling my age......

There is just something about those older S&W revolvers that exudes quality and craftsmanship, and there will always be a market for them. And, like anything else, if they ain't makin' any more of 'em, the value is bound to rise...

Old Corp - while maybe not quite as much grey in my beard as some, I am still old enough to recall the days getting an auto to feed hollow points was something of a rarity, and those that did were held on to like precious gems. When I started in shooting, 1911’s and browning high powers were about it in semi autos, except war trophy P38’s and lugers. The first and second generation S& W’s were around, but hadn’t really developed much of a following. Revolver was still king back then..

As a fairly serious collector of rare items (vintage motorcycle not gun) I have found that when I pass an item up because it is too high or the seller is a difficult person I usually stumble upon the same item sooner than later for a deal I like. Patience is your ally.

Well. All I can add is I just bought two pre model 10 circa 1926 in mint unfired condition for $650 each and a model 1902 for $360 in very nice condition but reblued. Seems the later models are selling for the same price. I think I lucked out for once on Gunbroker.

$500-600 today for a really nice M-10 is a good buy. I gave $600 for a 98% condition M10-5,2" RB.with box.

In 2016 or so I bought this 1 on G.B. for $329. Not the best finish, but it sure functions great! Bob

Old corp quite the deal on the 12! I don’t see many vintage K frames in my area at all, and have only in all my years seen a handful of 12’s about half of those having cracked frames. For that reason I won’t consider buying an alloy frame gun sight unseen on line unless there is a very well executed picture of the area known to crack.
