Yessir MajorD - it was the last thing I expected to see in this particular LGS.
First thing I looked at were the known problem areas in M12's and other alloy framed revolvers known for the infamous 'crack' near the barrel's entrance to the frame from either +P ammo or too-energetic handloads. It was fully intact.
This one doesn't get shot much, and when it does, it's often .38 WC's, some bulk .38 Spl. 130 gr FMJ's or some sedate handloads I made up for it pushing a 158 gr 'Blue Bullet' cast/coated moving along at less than 800 fps.
On the rare occasion I carry it, it will probably be loaded with the Federal 125 gr. 'Nyclad' HP's in the pic.

It's hard for me to justify that price unless it's in great condition. I sold a nickel model 10 with factory magna grips just a few years ago at $350.

For Sale: S&W 10-6

I listed this 10-6 in the classifieds several weeks ago. It has generated little interest. My intention at the time was to replace it with a S&W 67; however, that ship has sailed. I have not found a model 10 of any variation in the same or better condition for under $700.00 in local shops. I can’t replace it for the price I listed it for.

Got this 19-3 about a year ago or so with some bluing loss, no box or paperwork, tight lock up and best trigger I’ve ever felt and as an added bonus came with Herrett Jordan Trooper grips in great shape! $360 out the door.

Keep looking you’ll find one. That’s half the fun.

I have found a couple on GB for between $400 and $500, just never at a show.

This is a M&P .38 3" (Unusual, yes. A slight taper and all markings centered) with a ship-date of 1958 per Mr. Jinks at S&W. About 8 years ago or so, I was working one of my p/t 'retirement jobs' at a LGS/Indoor Range.
This one had come in the day before, on my day off, and needed to be logged in. Story was a youngster came in and traded it on, of course, a Glock. Came with a slightly worn DeSantis pancake actually made for a K-3". I got no real back story on the gun. One of the guys said he got the idea it was an inheritance - not sure.

Photo doesn't show it, but it shows signs of having been a 'work gun' at least for a time. Someone had done a decent job of smoothing away all the grooves on the standard service trigger. Mechanically, near perfect.

Checked with the owner/boss - he made me shell out $150 for it!

It now wears correct Diamond Magnas and a BK grip adapter.

Is a 4 inch Model 13 worth $900? That seems to be the average price on GB…..

Most of us can remember "back in the day". Like, when I could go to a gun show and take my pick of one of 3 new Colts, Python, SAA, or AR15(they were all Colts then.) for $375. I recently went to a show, where a guy had a couple of SKS rifles on his table, and had a sign that read, "I've already heard you cheap SKS story." I told him he had a sense of humor like mine. Last year I bought a high condition post war, low C serial number M&P .38 4" for 500 and felt great about it.

To add a little new data to the discussion, there were two S&W 10-5's on GB this week. I bought one for $336 BUT with shipping, tax, cc fee, it came to $427.08! I think you can still see it if interested at:
Just a moment.... There was one more that sold for $365 plus all the other costs. It was item 1005704175. I really wanted an S&W to compare to my Colt Official Police. From my reading, the two would have made up 90% of the police issue sidearms. Comments welcome

I just bought a pre model 10, or M&P to be correct made around 1946-47, that looks very nice from the pics. Price was reasonable at $372 I thought., Only $20 for shipping rather than the typical over charge like the $40 you paid, C&R so it's coming to me so no transfer cost. The details make a difference in the real cost of buying on GB. Don't have it yet so I'll have to see what it looks like in hand compared to pics. Persistent browsing can lead to good buys occasionally.

I'm still kicking myself for not cornering the market on these 3" Buds Aussie model 10s (10-5 in this case) IMG_20230911_183748.jpg

And I am tempted to try to trade for the model 10.

Input appreciated
I'm a cheapskate but I'd expect that much or more at a pawn/gun shop. And I'd pay it, were I in the market,

There can certainly be some regional variation.
In California with “the roster” prices on used guns are higher than elsewhere. ( high demand limited supply)
Being a former NY resident I can say prices were lower there, probably owing to the onerous handgun ownership laws which means a lot less people buying handguns ( I could go on for a long time on the nonsense in NY but suffice to say you needed a permit simply to own a handgun, and in some jurisdictions the start to finish time from application to approval was sometimes two years or more!)

I own 12 Model 10's ranging from the Model 10ND to the Model 10-10. They cost me $4,377.00. Average price: $365.

My most expensive Model 10 was the 10-7 I bought in 2015 for $475

My least expensive was the Model 10-6 I bought in 2017 for $210.

The OP stated that the gun in question is in a pawn shop. That brought about some offering buying strategies but the majority of pawn shop comments were derogatory. I fall into the opposite camp
I have dealt with pawn shops in my local area as well as out of town, on the road, etc. Have bought many items over the years, guns, tools, jewelry, misc, etc. Bought a few things that bit me but that is on me. Dealt with good people who happen to be in the pawn business. I've seen them make money and lose it. When they loan on stolen goods they lose their money when the pawn shop squad show up to get it. They fill a niche. They deal with people who are not candidates for more traditional sources to get loans to buy food, keep the lights on and yes just to throw it away and lose the property. I ve bought many guns from my favorite pawn shop. And I've pointed out to them when they got in over their head and loaned on busted, unsafe, misidentified or otherwise guns they should have passed on. They are in a high risk business and high risk deserves high returns. When we make a good deal on something we crow about it. But the pawn shop seller is villified for it. Value and cost are two different things. Nobody sells for cost. If you knew what the cost of that jewelry you just bought the wife you would never buy another piece. EVER. Pawn shop owner is another business person, hires and pays salary, pays taxes. Utilities, insurance, and suffers losses from theft and burglay, etc and deserves a profit. The amount not to be judged by me as I do not have his risks.
I often queer my own deal. If there is a gun I want and I am Sked what it is worth I give them an honest answer. It may be higher or lower than their listed price and we discuss. Sometimes I can buy it for my price, sometimes not. They quote me a price and I say yes or no.. No haggling, no character assassination or rail about his cost or business ethics. No hard feelings, it's business. If they give me any price break I always thank them.. I try to be a resource for them on anything I can help with. In turn they do not charge me a transfer fee. Sometimes, maybe twice a year I'll bring in lunch for them when they're too busy to take a break. Bottom line is I want them to be profitable, successful,, so they will be there the next time I need them. Who benefits if they close their doors?
My take. Pardon the length and don't feel I strayed too far.

Not being wealthy enough to rate as a 'collector', I am but a lowly accumulator. I did set out some years back to try to gather up M10's/M&P's in all the usual barrel lengths of 2", 3" 4" tapered, 4" hvy. bbl., 5" and 6".
So this is that motley gathering. Not a single one came with 'box & papers'.

There off to the left is a M1905 4th change 4" RB and a pretty good Victory model.
Some of these I paid a just a bit more than desired, such as the c.1954 M&P 2" (it's almost perfect condition, $450) but the c.1941 M&P 6" at the top (also near perfect) was from a dear friend, passed away now, for $265. So - I guess it all evens out.

I do not like pawn shops; but, just for one simple reason: their goals are not aligned with my goals. They want to maximize profits (for above reasons)…. I just want to buy cheap guns.

Buying retail has become more challenging of late. Incoming unique, rare, or at the least interesting guns, get picked over by employees, mgmt, or those that have a close relationship to the store. After that, there is a good possibility it will end up on gunbroker.

This is where you visit a store often and build a good rapport with the employees. Then they give you good deals and will call you if something they know you like comes in. Even if you don't become friends, just them seeing you face a lot, they will help you out more than someone that don't know the face.

We often think of things in the past tense.

$175 Model 10s.

$.90 gas.

.25 loaves of bread

Our first house that was $90K.

I remember very clearly thinking that there was NO WAY I would ever pay more than $400 for a Model 29-2. It does not seem that long ago.

The fact is that times change and often people do not keep up. We get into our comfort zone and do not keep up with the various changes ourselves. That can be price changes or changes in technology.

T Mc that is the truth!
I had been eyeing a model 10-5 at a local shop, $450. Not pristine by any means but clean and solid shooter grade. I swung by that shop yesterday while someone was completing the 4473 on it.

$450 around here will get you shooter grade, and not a real pretty one at that.

You're exactly right Rosewood. Getting to know the owners in my LGS has become a blessing AND a curse...LOL!

Lots of model 10s sell on GB for $450 or less. Condition varies so browsing without being in a big hurry to spend your money is the answer.

With online auction/sales sites, keep in mind that the sale price does not usually include shipping and your local FFL transfer fee. What seems like a better deal online can end up being the same or even a higher price than what you may find at your local, friendly dealer.

"Local friendly dealer?" What is this of which you speak? How much time you gonna spend driving just to find one model 10, maybe? Let your fingers do the driving, saves on gas and you will see numerous model 10s on GB for every one that you are apt to find at local gun shops. Most local gun shops around here think every S&W is made of gold.

Some people enjoy the hunt, they aren’t counting the hours and fretting about gasoline.
