saw a nice 17-4 at a show today, unusual because it had a red ramp front sight and white outline rear. the other unusual thing was the price, 795.00, what's this world comin' too!

They can ask what they want, but I'll bet you it will sit and not sell unless a newbie comes along that don't know any better. That's what they hope for.

i will usually try to dicker a bit on what i consider a high price but 795.00 is absurd, i just kept walking.

I know whereof you speak. I attended a show in Michigan, looking for a K-frame Model 14. The only one to be had was a pre-1957 K38 Masterpiece, which had seen some use, and the guy would not come down off his $675 asking price. I think he was simply "show and tell".
I ended up with a Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman. A far better gun, value-wise, for more than $200 less than the K38.
See my post for a picture.

just ran across this old thread; wondering just where the 'yikes' price on similar 17-4 might be currently???
The 8 3/8" 17-4 I have couldn't be replaced for that amount based on the last couple gun shows I've visited.

I hear you because I bought a mint 17-4 with 8 3/8 inch barrel 4 years ago for $550 and I wouldn't sell it today for that amount based on the fact it's my most accurate S&W revolver.
I added the grips after the purchase

For me, a 17-4 would still not get me to pay that much, but others may differ. However...I do love the four screw guns, and a nice one of those would likely get my full attention :-)

Based on what I see and hear that doesn't strike me as an unusual asking price. A local shop has a 1970s Model 10 tagged at $699.

I see nice model 17's often at that price. Maybe part of the reason I don't own one.
Truthfully, you can count on prices of nice old guns going up. You can also count on people who bought their nice old guns in years past complaining about it. But hey, complaining is part of the fun. It makes you feel better that you bought yours way back when. The thing is, way back when there were probably people complaining about how prices had gone up. "$350 for a used model 17? No way!"

I was offered a pinned barrel 17-4 last week for $600 which IMO is fair price in high condition with OEM grips no box , docs or tools .
$500 would have been very very tempting even though I dont need one and $450 buy now decide what to do with it later price.
The 17-4 has the gas ring on the cylinder instead of the yoke but the blueing process also changed to the lighter chemical blueing.
I would have been very tempted if it was a Super clean diamond grip dash 2 at $600 and wouldnt hesitate
at $600 if it was a 4 or 5 screw or a 4" .

Well, the OP didn't specify what barrel length he saw 5 years ago, but if it was/is NIB with the contents and lettered with that front sight, I think it probably is a $795 gun today. For a 6", replaced front sight, no box, less than new...still $200 high.

Around these parts they are asking about $750 for them in good shape, with box, tools, etc.
In my mind I still think that they are a $600-$650 purchase, but I suppose the same could be said for folks that bought a new Chevy in 1973...

I hear you. My grandfather's brand new 1962 Impala cost him a flat 3 grand in late 1961. It had the 300 HP 327ci V8 and the aluminum Powerglide.
I sold it about 15 years ago to a young man who wanted to restore it. I could probably get three times now what I sold it for then!

OK, for the complainers....what will you sell me yours for today? Will you part with it for the "reasonable" prices you quote here, like $450? I'd be interested as would many of our posters.

Glad I grabbed the well used one in my current thread for $250! I thought i was a deal but it sounds like even with the worn finish it was a very good deal.
