A elderly lady friend of my wife's has a model 10-5 that is in very good condition. It shows very little to no use. I want to know what she can expect to get out of it. I'm not going to buy it because I don't care for the model 10's. Any opinions would be a great help. Thanks, John

Specs? RB/SQ, 4", 6", 2"? Etc - all will help if pics are unavailable.

Ballpark there is a similar example with a similar story, 6" sq butt very light wear, widow's gun, listed for $500 in my area. A slightly 'nicer' 5" is also up at $600, but having only seen some blurry pics of that one I question the bluing.

What she can get out of it depends how she sells it. A gun store or pawn shop will offer $200-250. Consignment usually takes 20% off the top. She might get $350-375 back. FTF private sale, which I think is legal in Montana, would probably hit $500. These are just my uninformed opinion based on what happens in my area. It is a very nice revolver.

Might list it here in a community of Smith lovers, but that entails hassles and cost with shipping.

I bought a really nice one on GB recently that was made in 1967. Nice but not quite as nice as the one she has. My winning bid was $455.00 so the $500 estimate sounds about right for hers to me.

As mentioned above a lot depends on how it is sold.
Pawn and gun shops notoriously low ball in situations like this, often offering a pittance, and might bait the deal with statements like it is “old”, or no one wants these old 6 shooters anymore, etc and offer 100 bucks.
Private sale is most likely to get the best value, but you have the hassle of offering it for sale ( on line, local gun club bulletin board etc) then dealing with phone calls and arranging meetings to examine, and dealing with tire kickers.
The “easy button” in these situations is to find a gun dealer that does consignments, will list on an auction site like gun broker, or consigning it to an auction house. This usually gets a pretty fair price and is actually what I usually do. Typically auction houses take 20%, but if it is a good auction house that typically does firearms, they generally get top dollar.
I have used an auction house local to me a number of times, and they will likely get let’s say $450 for the gun in this condition. So the seller would get $360.
That is a nice model 10, and I can’t imagine any gun guy or girl not liking it

Yeah, here - western ID - 450-500-ish would be the going for private sale. I strongly recommend against pawnbrokers and if need be suggest a dealer on commission as others have said.

$500 - $550 coastal Virginia area

Don't know much about values in Western States, but around here ther Model 10 4" Blue is pretty standard in the $500 range with no box, docs, accessories. The 4" Nickel maybe a touch more.

I sold a 1972 4" Blue in Excellent condition for $528 and a 4" 1977 Nickel also in excellent condition for $550 recently. Still see them now and then at LGS in the $600 tag price but probably lower if it sits more then 30-60 days.

I say she would do best on private sale in the $500 to $550 range.

I received the pics this morning. It is the 4" pencil barrel.

Looks very nice! As others have said it is worth every bit of $500-$600 if bluing is as good as it appears in pictures and mechanically sound. Doesn't looked to have been carried or shot much. I am partial to the Model 10 with 4" standard barrel as that was my issue revolver in the 1970's.

Like the proverbial.....

... little old lady who only drove her car to church on Sundays. I don't LIKE paying $500-600 for them but that's the going price for one like that and they are worth every penny. Any gun that has been pefected over a century and a quarter of production has got to be good.

That would be a $500 here in SC…… I’ve never had a model 10 I didn’t like or wasn’t accurate.Their the “Forefather” of all modern S&Ws,and deserve a place of honor! One of my favorites is this round butt shooter grand-love this old gal!
