Once again, I am posting this fine Model 28-2 which I believe to be a Jovino.
I would appreciate any info you all can give me. The printed sheet is a copy of the stamping on the yoke. Any ideas on what they mean????????????

What makes you think it is a Jovino?
Have you lettered the gun?

Tipoc...It has the earmarks of Jovino style conversion. The wide hammer spur, the elimination of the slotted trigger by smoothing it out, the style of detant of the ejector rod housing, the grips, and the fact that there are at least two other model 28's that Jovino converted. Most are model 25's. I am not sure it "IS" a Jovino, thats why I am showing it on this forum.

From what I can see it does look "Jovinoish". ( Is that a new S&W forum term ?)
#1 rounded hammer
2 factory grooved trigger ground to smooth
3 rounded shroud with ,I assume, a ball-detent for lockup
4 Packey gripper on a gripframe reground to K frame round butt.
Sadly a letter is probably the only way to tell for sure.

This is an interesting point. Would lettering the gun establish that the gun was sold / shipped to Jovinos ???? Or would it still be possible that the gun was sold to another buyer .. that in trun took it to Jovino for customizing.
Really a great looking gun tho Mulehide.

Why don't you call them, furnish them the serial number and see if they did the work?
John Jovino Gun Shop

Phone: (212) 925-4881
Myself and many other Members admired your initial post and gun but brought it to your attention that ANY good gunsmith or machinist could make a Jovino copy.
Good luck with your hunt.

I tried this some time ago.. no response. I was told by another member, that Jovinos had changed hands since this work would have been done, and that any records that they did have were likely long gone. From the lack of a reply ... I would tend to agree.
Had my response in the middle of your post ... confused even me.

As a big 28 fan and for your collecting pleasure, I hope it is indeed a Jovino. Be advised however that lots of smiths in that era did similar conversions. I think you need to letter that puppy.

Yes I do. Tried contacting Jovinos ... no luck. Wondering if lettering will do any good either.

Mine, a 25-2 did letter as being shipped to the Jovino Company and looks exactly like yours, with the single and double action the smoothest I have ever felt. If you want peace of mind, buy a letter. Notime2

Jovino's may be able to verify it for you. They may also not but a phone call will tell. A letter from Roy may also tell you something. The gun looks like a Jovino but it would be nice to know for sure.
My understanding (and I could be wrong) is that they had a gunsmith do the work for the store. Who that was I don't know and it could have been more than one smith.
At any rate a good looking and hopefully a good shooting gun.

You might also try to contact Robert Vivas (a forum member, I believe). He worked for Jovino's back in the day and now has a shop in upstate NY. His website: www.vivasandson.com

In one of these threads someone commented that Jovino guns were marked "effector". Is this correct?

I believe that a lot of the later Jovino's were marked as such...but that a lot of the earlier one's weren't.

The gun's an early Jon Jovino custom. I have an identical gun that came from Jovinos. They are sweet guns. Ed.

Would it be possible to see a photo of the frame without the grips on it?
