Default I’m a sucker for shiny guns RANGE REPORT ADDED

I was strolling the dog food aisle of King Soopers when my phone started buzzing. My first grandkid is on deck to pop out today so my wife is in New Orleans with Number One Son while I shovel snow and watch dogs. I figured it was the big arrival, but nooooooooo. It was my gun store buddy saying come look.

It was this cute little thing. I’ve never had a Model 49 and he dropped the price to 450 so a deal was struck. The box turned out to be a blue plastic one from a much later gun.

Colorado has ended all crime with a three day waiting period, so no good pics til then. I should have a baby picture to show off by then, too.

Nice pistola! Too bad it's gonna be forgotten the moment you see your grandchild.

Congratulations on your grandchild, and new revolver! My daughter-in-law gave birth this morning to a beautiful baby girl. Our 4th grandchild.

Those grips look like the Pachmayer "Compacs". I used to have the same ones on my M&P340, and they did a pretty good job of absorbing some of the felt recoil.

I cant wait to see what you find if someone is expecting twins. Maybe a matched pair of nickel 1911's?

Congratulations.

They are - I like them too. The little finger swoop at the bottom makes all the difference.

Vintage Smith revolvers are very nice but no comparison to those grandkids. I've got 5, ages 25 to 8. I thought that the first one would be special, but they all are. Time sure does fly. Enjoy your new gun when you get it in hand.

This little guy showed up, too. 8 pounds, 15 ounces, and a full head of hair under his beanie.

Everytime you take that revolver for a spin, you'll think of your grandson.
Or vise-versa.
Congrats on both!

Great find! I'd have been all over that one.

Definitely Pach Compacs

I bailed it out of gunjail today and went straight to the range. 50 rounds of PMC 130 grain ball all headed satisfactorily down range. They group as well as old eyes and tiny shiny sights allowed at 20 yards.

It cleaned up well. I swapped the Packys for smaller Hogues that will hold the line until my BK adapter gets here. (Already on the way. I’m talking to you, Tyler & company).

I don’t know the secret of photographing nickel without the reflections making it look weird. The finish is basically flawless. Nobody did nickel like S&W.

I’m gonna put 1000 grains of lead in it and assign it to coat pocket duty.

Somebody else got to go home, too.

Nice find and nickel on top of it. I have three model 36s , an early 42, a 34-1, a pre model number 30 and a first model Cobra. I have always wanted a model 49 or 38. Maybe someday

My model 34 is factory nickel. S&W used to do such a nice plating job.

Congratulations and good luck with yours.

Model 49's: In the early 2000's I bought a Model 49 no dash. it had Pacs so old and worn they were smooth and worn through to metal in several places. I had some J-Frame bananas in my assortment of grips. The gun was blue when it left the factory but it had been "Metal Lifed", which is a type of Teflon coating. The color looks like the matt silver finish model 38's come with now. The action is the smoothest I have ever felt. In fact, when my F-I-L went over it (He's a factory trained Armorer and also a factory trained Competition Gunsmith- trained by S&W in the late 60's) He thought the hammer spring had been cut until he disassembled it for deep cleaning, All the springs were factory replacement sprigs.

I shoot Speer Gold Dot Short barrel 135 gr +P. I have used this ammo on several raccoons!

The gun in my DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster is my constant companion. Three times I thought I was in for a good mugging, when I stuck my hand in my pocket and that motion sent the Nar-Do-Wells running, a fair indication off their intentions. the gun never cleared the pocket!

Granddaughters: My oldest arrived on Christmas day 17 years ago, I also have 6, 4 and 3 year old Granddaughters! (The youngest grandson showed up 2 days before Christmas last year, he has 4 male cousins in my family!)

Granddaughters seem to have pinky fingers stronger than Superman, and continually wrap the hearts of grizzly old grandpas around them!

Enjoy all the stages of life your granddaughter will take you through. 3 out of mine 4 live 500+ miles away, so I don't see them near enough to be satisfied! When they a little do what you can to get into their lives! You will become a fixture, and when they are older, they will crave to have you around!

Ivan

Fine looking 49 you have. I do have a thing for the Body Guards. I carried a M38 back in the 70's. I can say that now. The statutes of limitations has run out.
