Default Found another good old revolver 15-3 circa 1971

I went to the LGS to pay for the 4506-1 I had put in the back a couple of days ago. I get there and sitting in the used gun section is this beautiful, possibly unfired Model 15-3.(1971 per SCSW) No box, papers,or tools but I couldn't resist at $500. Could you?

That would have come home with me at that price. Heck, probably for $100 more that that price. Congrats on a great find. I'm due for one of those, really I am.

Me too! It's either feast or famine around her with older pre-lock Smiths. This is the 3rd handgun I bought from this store in the past week. A 1984 Model 60 ND, a 1995 4506-1, and now this 1971 15-3. May it never end!

Nice revolver! That is at least $200 cheaper than Model 15's in that condition go for around here. Great buy!

About a month ago I replaced a 15-1 that I sold in ‘76. They aren’t too common around here, this one came into the shop I work at as an outright purchase.

Not pristine, grips were trashed and replaced by some Magna grips in my parts stash, has holster wear, a small rust spot on the left side that’s kinda hidden with a Oxpho Blue touch up. One side of the rear sight blade has been flattened along with the front blade, appears to been dropped. But mechanically light, good lockup and bore. My employee pricing sealed the deal.

Even so, if one like yours shows up it’s mine too.

I still work full time as a pediatric nurse. If I ever got a part time job at a gun store I don't think I would ever bring home a paycheck. lol
I just lucked out on these 3. Sometimes it pays to listen to the voices in your head.

You got a great revolver at a very good price. I paid $100 more for my 15-3 (1974) at a local auction 8 years. Enjoy.

Good snag...

Model 15's are great Smith's.
Found this one about 2 weeks ago in a
local pawn shop.
Previous owner added a T grip and PC stocks.

I've got a few of them, but one in that condition would have been mine for that price! You got the "Classic S&W" for a killer price! Enjoy!

Now that's a nice one. I'm pretty fond of the Model 15/67 myself so I know the attraction. Just loaded some more wadcutters this morning

Might as well show them off again.

67-1 from about 1985

15-2 from 1966. Sorry, I need to redo this picture.

They both love wadcutters. But then I suppose most 38's do.

The 15 is a classic! Glad you rescued it.

Although I am always on the lookout for 2 inchers, I couldn’t resist this nickel beauty.

Thanks to all for your kind comments.
I was right about the price:

"Value of $150 from 1970 to 2023. $150 in 1970 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $1,189.45 today, an increase of $1,039.45 over 53 years."

Yes, so you could cut the frame for a set of Farrant or other cut-frame grips. 15-2's seem to be the ones that are more likely to have a serial number back far enough. The one pictured is a 15-2 I got specifically to cut the frame. Grips are actually Joe Blackford N frame grips.

The Model 15 is definitely a classic. Great find, for sure. I have a twin of yours, also a dash 3 from May of 1971.

Way back in the mid to late 70's I remember my dad had a Model 15 among his collection. We had a family friend who was a LEO in our town. He was probably issued a model 10 at the time ala 1ADAM12. My father gave him the 15 and even though I had no interest in it at the time I always remembered that revolver. I think that is one reason I jumped on this one when I saw it. It may be the same age as the one my dad gave away almost 50 years ago.

At $500 I would buy. One of the pawn shops I visit has a nice model 15, but marked at $750. I haven't even asked to look at it our of the display case at that price.

Maybe next trip, as the closer it gets to Christmas the more they want cash they can loan out at high interest

Absolutely beautiful revolver! Excellent price! Well worth buying even if it'd been priced higher! Very few modern production revolvers can match the quality of a Model 15, must less exceed it. Congratulations! Sincerely. bruce.

Late back to this thread but in ‘74 when I bought the 15-1 earlier mentioned I spent the “high dollar” amount of $125 on it, a budget stretch as I remember it, my car payment on a year old Chevy was only $77 dollars a month. Girlfriend at the time, later fiancée and a bit later later EX fiancée was none too happy at the time.

Such was life.
