I was under the impression that all 19-4 pistols were a pinned and recessed. I saw a 19-4 without the pinned barrel. Was this optional?

Not "optional." No, but your dash 4 could have come right at the end of the run, as the dash 5 was coming in (1982). Some late dash 4 and early dash 5 examples have either the pinned barrel without the counterbored cylinder or the other way around. There are plenty of known examples.

That doesn't sound like a good serial number. My M19-4 is a 40Kxxxx.
Gil is right. S&W never used more than three digits in front of the K in that serial sequence. In fact, the highest number used was in the 311K range. Please go back and check it.
