Default So close yet so far - a 19-3 story...

I am fortunate to live in a small neighborhood with a bunch of great neighbors. One of them is a really nice older lady across the street - Karen (yes, her name really is Karen). She is a widower and I help her out with house projects any time she asks. During the Covid lockdown of 2020 she saw me working outside and walked over to ask me a favor. Her daughter and grandson were coming to live with her for a while and she had a "loaded pistol in a lockbox" that she wanted out of the house. She wanted me to break into the lockbox and keep the pistol at my house in my safe. Naturally I said "no problem" so she returned after a few minutes with some cheap Costco type safe about the size of a large shoebox. BTW don't trust those things for anything more than a storage box, I picked the lock in less than 30 seconds. Inside the box were some papers she wanted along with a pistol rug. Inside the rug was a beautiful loaded model 19-3. She told me that she and her husband purchased the revolver new in the late 1970s and took it to a range on Friday nights a few times. She estimated that it has had less than two boxes of shells through it.

I completely disassembled the revolver and cleaned it thoroughly. I snapped this photo of it in 2020, it is sitting on a large cedar column that I was planing down and refinishing at the time. I offered to purchase it from her for whatever price she wanted, telling her honestly what it was worth. She wants to keep it in the family and pass it down to her son (he lives in San Francisco so I doubt that will ever happen ) which I totally understand.

The revolver is still in my safe, close to four years later. I ask her every six months if she wants it back and she always says "do you mind continuing to store it for me?". No problem. I took it out today and wiped it down admiring it. I REALLY wish I owned it, but I am content to be its steward and help out a wonderful neighbor. So close yet so far...

Man, that is a beautiful gun... The grips are stunning and the bluing is reminiscent of pre 1970 Colts.

Hopefully the caretaker will inherit the winepress of the vineyard.

You're a saint for asking her about her plans for the revolver every 6 mos.! Many folks might tend to stay silent and hope that she forgets you have it in your safe. Even if her son turns out to be a "gun guy", it would be a chore for him to get it transferred to the People's Republik of Kalifornia (at least until it becomes C&R). As your neighbor ages, she may need some cash for unexpected expenses so just be ready to pony up some Benjamins. Or she may just feel that you deserve to own the revolver. At least you have it in your possession for the time being so that you can handle and admire it. Patience is a virtue! Good luck.

Love me some four inch Model 19 Combat Magnum.

The dash 3 appears around 1967, around 69 the fs ramp becomes integral with the barrel.
While not outlined in the SCSW the frame and r side barrel rollstamps changed a couple times through the dash 3 production as well.

It looks like an early 70's gun ,
Of course the serial number would pin it down ,
Wondering if the right side front frame rollstamp have a large ampersand or modern style?

Serial number is 9K3373x

Here is a photo of the right side. Lighting is not nearly as good being inside.

Yowsah! Is all I can say. Hope wherever it ends up, it has a good home.
Just the thought of a San Fran landing worries me.
