This gun was the subject of an earlier thread. Due to bad laws in California many older guns cannot be sold by dealers. There is what is known as "the roster", a list of approved guns that can be sold. An exception is made for single action revolvers. So the double action sear was removed when I purchased it, parts were in a little bag. I had a local gunsmith reassemble it. It's got some wear, and a rust spot on the cylinder and muzzle. The recoil shield is worn as though it was carried often so I assume it's a agency gun. It also has a number under the grip. Anyone recognize the marking? Serial number S263189, so maybe '66?

I bought my 58 in 1978, I think, and it had an S serial number (327). The model was not popular and sold slowly. IIRC, SFPD allowed them for a while, and some other agencies issued them, but most were officer purchases.

That might be an agency inventory number, but most agencies, I think, put identification on the frame where it would be easily seen. The electro-pencil numbers could be evidence numbers or someone's driver's license number. Doesn't really matter, it's yours now and it does seem to have wear associated with carry and neglect. The Model 58 was intended for the law enforcement market and I expect that is where most were sold.

1966 would be correct. Gun looks nice, just some muzzle wear is all I can see, most likely from a holster. Mine is a little later than yours, shipped in August 1968 although the SN puts it in late 1967.

Couldn't say what the etched number on the butt frame is about, it isn't from the factory. Nice find.

A little confused on your post. If it has a mfg date of 1966 then it should be C&R and exempt from the roster. C&R is over 50 years old or prior to 1974.

I recognized the marking. Bubba put his Drivers License Number on it.

James, I had thought so too but the gun shop (a popular place in Sacramento) sold it like this. It may have been incorrectly entered in their inventory. I didn't want to argue and it would not have changed the price. I find different gun shops seem to interpret our laws differently. Some want two pieces of id, others just accept my CCW as good.

Model 58's have seemed to dry up
around my part if the world.
Have not seen one at a GS in ages much less a shop.

I think model 58’s are really cool and used to have a San Francisco PD gun. The grips on your gun alone are worth quite a bit of money because they are very hard to find.
