Soft spot for the 28-2s in 6"
Bought this off the forum (thanks BigBoy99!) and after a 13 day delay in NYC by the USPS pony express (trucker strike victim?) finally arrived. It's an S serial number so fills a void in my "collection".
The action and mechanics are excellent and a quick cleaning up with some Blue Magic and a change to some magnas, it's ready to go to the range. (I really like the Magnas on these N frames)
These are such fun guns to shoot full power 357 loads out of and not worry about issues. The brick ship house!
Forged stuff through and through! Just realized..my 28-2 showed up on 2-28!

The 28-2 is one of only two N-frames I own and it may be the best. Congrats on yours!  Great gun!

Bought my 6" M-28 in 1981, was looking for a 4", couldn't find one-had to settle for a 4" M-27 instead.
A 6" M-28 is as close to an all arounder as we'll ever get. A little big for CCW, but firing target loads is like firing a .22m for home SD it will handle the heaviest loads the shooter can handle, for hunting..

I agree thst the HP is a terrific gun. This dash two from 1967 is one of my favorites, patina and all. Enjoy your new toy.

Congrats on a real nice 28. My first S&W was a new 6 inch model 28 in 1977. Did my best to try an wear it out, but was unsuccessful.

I’m hoping to be able to purchase a 6 inch model 28- when my buddies estate is settled. I took it to S&W for same day LE service / trigger job back in the early 80s. I might have had them do the red ramp also but can’t remember. I have a holster waiting for it ! It has the box and original grips. I found the Herretts for him in a used grip box for $10.00.

My only 6" 28 is a 1960 no dash. Picked it up at a local pawn shop in 2014 for $400 OTD. I have been able to pick up a couple of 4" 28-2 at pawn shops.

My first Mod. 28 was a 6" but, I don't remember if it was an "S" or "N" prefix. The second was a 4" but, both were ultimately sold to purchase other "wants."
I made a decision to acquire another Mod. 28, 6" to relive my youth and it was a wise decision. It came with magna grips, numbered to the revolver but, I prefer the target grips for shooting.
It's a keeper and a great shooter!

These are some of the finest service revolvers that I have ever owned and that Smith and Wesson ever built. Probably goes without saying. Yet it should be said. I habitually look for older Smith revolvers and last month found another Model 28-2. It was rather challenged finish-wise but in very tight condition otherwise. It cleaned up very well and it's a mid 70's build. Oddly enough for the build period it has the serial number stamped in the ejector rod cover. Very unusual since the company had stopped stamping the serial number there for many years. But it's a beauty and I just couldn't pass it up. $795 with no box/papers/tools... but it is out here in the west which seems to be a higher priced area....

My first S&W revolver was an S prefix 6" 28-2 with great fitting diamond magnas that I bought new in Oct of 1966. Still have it along with three 4" 28-2s that I picked up over the years. Love the plain looking rugged model 28s.

Very nice 28 you got there OP.
I've had several over the years, but 4 and 6 inch ones, but recently ran into another one and decided this time it stays. It was kinda funky looking, and was wearing an awful set of K-frame targets, but all it needed was a good cleaning, followed by some Flitz, Ren Wax, and a set of Altamont grips I had in the "junk" drawer, and it's presentable in polite company again.
I do need to redo this picture. I've got better light in here now.
Like all Model 28's I suppose, it's a great shooter, with a very nice DA trigger. Magnums or wadcutters, it handles them all.

Congratulations on your nice HP acquisition! Lots of HP and Model 28 fans here on the Forum as you can tell. I've got a few, and most are -2s from the mid-1970s. They are definitely built like tanks and extremely dependable. The only issue I ever had with a Model 28 was with one of my 28-2 4-inchers...every so often during shooting the extractor rod would unscrew enough to bind the cylinder. A drop of blue Loctite and re-tightening the rod fixed that problem. Glad to hear that you filled a hole in your collection! Enjoy!

What's the SN range on that? I love seeing lazy ampersand barrel stamps, this one must be around 1973 or earlier. Matter of fact about 3/4 of the ones posted on this thread have lazy ampersands. I'll throw mine into the mix, it's from 1973; gets more range time than any of my S&W wheel guns:

I bought my 6” S 128549 slightly used in the summer of 1955 for $56. Must have been manufactured late 54 or early 55. Very special!! Part of my flight gear on 4 deployments flying over N.V.
