Model 17-3. I paid $575 out the door w/ boxes. Feeling like the luckiest guy alive
3T version. Early 1970s 6K serial number.
Probably one of the better deals I’ve ever got. Barely has a scratch on it

What a deal and a beautiful gun! You stole that one.
I picked up one manufactured in 1955 a couple of years ago and really love shooting it. I think the K target pistols are not only beautiful instruments, they represent the high point in accuracy, manufacturing and design.
I picked up a 99% new 1980 3T 14-4 K38 last week in what I thought was a great deal but you win the prize this week.

What a nice looking gun. Did you have a mask on when you robbed the seller?

lol not this time.
Now I have to sell my old 17-3. I might throw that one in the wood box and list it in the classifieds sometime soon
Then keep the new one in the original box with original paperwork. I’m not sure if wood box is even brand name s&w or if it’s generic

Looks like the real deal in the view available, it was just re-flocked in red instead of blue. Worth a bit either way!

Would you mind posting a picture of the end label on that BP box? I'm particularly interested in seeing what is the "Stocks" portion.
Thanks.

Great buy on a great revolver. My “-3” is an early one (1968) with a zillion rounds thru it and it’s still perfect. Finest .22 handguns ever made IMO.

Thank you.
Based on the box itself and mainly on the strange symbol inked in the "Stock" portion of the label, I doubt very seriously that this revolver shipped with those target stocks.
For one thing, the mark (and the ink itself) indicates that someone outside the factory put that mark there. Second, the vast majority of Model 17-3 units shipped with Magna stocks, not target stocks. The label likely had only an S in that location. When a revolver shipped with target stocks, that portion would be marked ST, in the same ink as the rest of the marks (boxes in my safe verify this).
None of that has any effect on the value of the K-22 you purchased. It is a dandy and you should be proud of it. The price you paid ($575) is also excellent. Way to go!
Incidentally, the serial number indicates production in 1974.

Was it very common they would use a 5 ring box for a magna stocked k22 gun? I also found the marking on the box odd but the 5 rings had me thinking maybe the mark was potentially human error.
Kind of looks like a T was the original mark and was changed to S?

To me it looked like a T was originally written and someone scribbled over it in a different color / thickness of ink. This was also in the box with some other pamphlet type stuff I didn’t look much at. But it seems like original paperwork with the gun. I don’t doubt it’s an original box that maybe someone scribbled on like an idiot over the T for target
Or it does sort of look like they may have tried to add S after the T. As in TS for target stocks. I’ve seen lots of boxes say TS when referring to the target stocks

You have the box in front of you and I'm only looking at a photo. All I can say is that whatever mark was originally there has been altered. The oddness of the squiggle and the different ink are pretty conclusive.
ST and TS are both seen. People speculate over the difference, but I've seen a lot more of them marked ST than TS. I've seen the statement that ST means "smooth target," but according to Dr. Jinks, the S stands for "square." So, ST is "square butt target stocks." TS would then be "target, square." With Magna stocks, the S simply means "square." I suspect the difference between ST and TS is the person doing the marking on any particular day.
As for the 5 ring box, I pulled a Model 14-4 out of the safe last night. It shipped with target stocks made of walnut and checkered, the box label is marked ST, and the corners have five rings. I know this box is original to the gun because I bought it new at retail back in 1981. Everything that was in the box in 1981 is still there. In addition, that gun is lettered and the letter confirms the originality of the checked walnut target stocks.
The counterpoint is that all the Models 14, 15 and 17 of the same period for which I have original boxes for units shipped with Magna stocks have four ring corners.
From that I conclude there is a real possibility that your K-22 did ship with target stocks, regardless of the reason for the over-inked mark. The only way you are going to solve this riddle and be certain that your fine new K-22 shipped with target stocks is to get a letter from the S&W Historical Foundation. That will be definitive.
And, I will add, that revolver is worthy of a letter.

That's the thing . I don't ever plan on selling it . I buy , sell , and trade all the time but that one is a keeper .
Around here , a Mod. 17 for 5-7 would be snatched up in a heartbeat .

Thanks maybe I’ll look into a letter.
Do you think it came with the wood box also? Or do think that’s something the owner bought later down the line just to put it into?

Boxes
I think to find out if the revolver came with target stocks is to see if the revolver will fit in the box with the target stocks on. In my limited experience revolver boxes that came with target stocks were bigger than boxes that came with Magna stocks. I have 2 M-17 boxes marked TS both are 5 hole edges and 1 58" tall, I have 1 M-17 box marked S and it has 4 hole edges and is 1 3/8" tall. I've never seen a M-17 come in a wooded box.

I paid the same price for my Model 17 - 15 years ago! Mine has the skinny hammer, skinny trigger, - and no box! You did very well indeed.

You ended up with a NICE package at a good price! I think that I paid close to that on my 17-2, 7 years ago. No box or extras and rubbers. Very accurate and a clean gun. Bob

I have developed a real liking for the K22 Masterpiece and that is a nice one. I don't remember ever seeing a wood display box for a K frame. Perhaps it was redone for your 17-3. Regardless, great gun at a great price.
I'll refrain from reposting a picture of my new 17-1
