A Custom Treasure Chest of Model 60 Stainless, Gold and Ivory
For years, I have been looking to acquire a S&W engraved by Lynton McKenzie (a very talented engraver, who was a mentor to my friend and master engraver, Phil Quigley). I have photos of some of the beautiful work he did, but have never seen one for sale. That changed a couple of months ago when I found the below Model 60. It is very simply engraved with some gold wire and sculpted animal inlays. It also came in a beautiful custom case made by Mr. McKenzie.
The initials on the top of the case are "BPM" for William (Bill) P. Murphy Jr., who was a surgical genius involved with many medical inventions and collaborated with the invention of the flexible sealed blood bag which transformed the way in which blood transfusion are done... (note that Dr. Murphy died in Nov 2023)
Lynton's initials (LMcK) are on the trigger side of the side plate and the date it was engraved (10-2-73) is engraved on the top side of the crane.
The grips are a beautiful ivory with the following inscribed:
* Under the left grip is etched "Gold inlay and scenes by Lynton McKenzie New Orleans Oct 73"
* Under the right grip is etched "These grips made by Joe Salazar The New Orleans Arms Co"
Note that Joe Salazar and Lynton McKenzie worked together under the company name The New Orleans Arms Co.
I hope that you enjoy the above. As always, I'd love to hear your impressions, questions, thoughts and comments.
Thanks for letting me share,

Wow, Richard, a lot less work than I think I've ever seen in one of your posts. That sure doesn't detract from the wonderful, lifelike details in the animals. The gold wire adds to the overall presentation. A very cool acquisition! Thanks for sharing!
(I can see this as your opening 'show' in a show and tell session: "You think this is great? You ain't seen nothing yet!")

Stunning in its simplicity!
If my memory is not fading, I was in NO in the early 70s and visited the New Orleans Arms Company. There was a cased set there with an ivory stocked Winchester and a Colt SA.

Congratulations! What a wonderful gun, probably the prettiest 60 I've seen. What impresses me most is it's obvious this gun was both loved and carried. Outstanding!

Beautiful gun. I really like the little chipmunk.
I am surprised that the S&W logo and address were apparently polished away.

What an utterly fantastic new addition to the family.
While everything is very simple it is an extremely elegant upgrade to the model 60
The gold wire line work is very understated, I always love wedding bands on the cylinder and barrel, and that is some beautifully grained elephant ivory for the grips.

Richard,
The good Doctor picked one of the very best engravers of the times. I am very curious about his admiration of chipmunks and what I believe is a bluebird and what the backstory might be.
Congratulations to you on this acquisition, it is a wonderful addition to your collection of masterfully engraved firearms.
Best regards,
Jake

It would go quite nicely with your engraved 649 with the beautiful ivory grips, that happens to be your avatar...

I agree
That was one of my luckiest deals. I purchased it based on some cell phone pictures that were pretty bad.
I was thrilled when I finally got my hands on it.

HOLY CATS!
I'm not a big fan of engraving, but that M60 is truly spectacular!
The detail on the engraving and the gold inlays are absolutely SUPERB, while at the same time very simple, understated, and elegant.
And those beautiful ivories really put it over the top!
What a treasure!

It has already been stated by several others….beauty in simplicity, elegance!
In women’s fashion the little black dress!
Says it all!
The chipmunk is outstanding!

Jake:
I do not know any of the back story, BUT I do know that Dr. Murphy had at least two guns engraved by Lynton McKenzie... I know this, because I purchased the other one as well. I was hoping that the seller (a dealer who lived near the Murphys) would find the custom case for the other gun prior to taking some photos. I am still hoping that... Here's a little iPhone photo preview:
... the other gun is a model 67 - also with gold inlays and beautiful ivories, in addition to a way cool butt cap.

Richard,
Good gracious, what a wonderful pair. You hit the jackpot in your quest to own some McKenzie engraving. The ivory on the model 67 is outstanding and I wish you continued luck on finding the case for it.
Thanks for sharing.

What a cute little 60! I agree the bird is a bluebird. We have put up nesting boxes for them over the decades.
The 67 is quite nice also.
What is that I see on the butt cap? A gold border, maybe around initials?

Richard,
What a great pair
Love the Ivory on the 67
It looks like the butt cap has some gold wire line work at the very least

The butt cap on the 67 has a gold wire line around the circumference of the side and a very nice artistic fluid gold line border pattern on the bottom of the cap. Part of the challenge in photographing the bottom of the butt cap is that it is polished to a mirror finish and most of what you see when you photo it is a reflection of the camera... I'll eventually get some good photos and post them...

It is either cherry, or a cherry finish on some other wood. It is very nice in person and a very classy way to display that little Model 60.
