Yes, they are great little 22 revolvers. That one looks almost brand new, except for the odd appearance of the checking on the right side grip.

All kidding aside the Model 34 22/32 Kit Gun is an iconic piece of S&W history. They shoot very well if you get used to the small frame size. They were designed to be taken into the field as a useful camp gun and they are indeed useful.
That serial number is odd though! Where did the gun originate?

Great gun, but I agree the SN is strange. My 34-1s all have an M prefix such as M224021. Is there a story on it?

I agree....Model 34-1, Model 17, great rimfire revolvers. The best in my opinion are the K22 Masterpiece, or the K22 Outdoorsman but these are horribly expensive and are more "holster guns" than "kit guns" which fit easily in tackle boxes, etc.
Regarding the 1970's S&W 22's I have had to ream both my Model 34-1's (a 1972 and a 1975) and my 1972 Model 17-3 because they would not easily chamber rounds (several different brands tried), and if you thumb pushed them in, they were miserable to extract.
Enter a Manson cylinder finish reamer, very few twists, while supported and lubed...and absolutely no more issues.
Right now the Model 34-1 is running around $650 to $700 for decent ones (no box, docs ot tools). If the round butt grips are too small for your hands, try the round to square conversion grips like my 1972. Correction: I see the OP's already has the conversion grips on it.
Could that serial number be a product number? I didn't know S&W actually stamped butt numbers like that, even for export but I learn something new every day on this Forum

My favorite 22 revolver. I shoot mine much better than my 617 even though I have owned the 34 40 years and put lots of miles and rounds through it

The butt of that gun shows evidence of the original serial number having been removed. There is a buff mark under the number. Depending on who stamped the number that is on there now, that gun could be a legal problem here in the U.S. Please be careful.

Should be a nice shooter. The model 34-1 was made after Oct 1960. The serial number is clearly not a factory stamping. The original number was removed, the strange number was stamped then the gun was reblued.
The cylinder release thumb piece is pre WWII.
Check the back of the right side grip to find the gun’s original serial number stamped there. Then we can tell about when it’s from.
Is this gun in the U.S.A.?

The serial # on the 34-1 of this thread is not original and not a S&W serial number.
Your 34-1 serial #M97378 likely shipped in 1977.
