Default 66-1 factory engraved? 4" 3Ts..SB..

Cold rainy day so I decided to stop by a few local gun shops.

I spy this 66-1 and ask to see it, while I'm being told it's factory A engraving and was recently brought in to sell on consignment.

Original owner. No letter..just the box with label, tools and manual.

Buy the gun not the story is flowing through my head.

It looks unfired and nothing on the gun looks wrong. Target trigger, target hammer, smooth stocks. All mechanics excellent.

I like it.

Matching box..tools,manuals.

How much? Hmm..

We finally agree upon $2k, out the door.

More than I expected to spend on a gun today..but a 4" P&R K frame SB with 3Ts and “just might be” a factory S&W engrave …it’s nice to my eyes..and I’ve got room in the safe… for a scratched up

Combat Magnum Masterpiece.

Good rainy day find!

Your time and money looking for another to compare the two is worth something. For me , the convenience is there . I would scoop it up.
Nice Combat Magnum.
Good Luck … I hope what you get is all that you hoped.

Is there another label on the other side of the box with the ten digit product code?

I don’t remember seeing anything on that end of the box. I think this gun was made in mid 70s? And they hadn’t started using barcode labels etc. but no expurt.

Not trying to bust your chops, but it does not have a pinned barrel -- probably early '80s.

The era is correct for it to have been one of the "factory engraved" contract guns done in Italy. I doubt the letter would say that.

The timing is good for the one-piece box with a handwritten label, too.

I like it too and would have snapped it up at $2k OTD. And I'd say it is factory although probably Italian contract engraved as two-bit cowboy suggests. The Class A/B/C ranking seems to vary quite a bit with these guns but with the box marked as it is it would probably letter as Class A engraved.

I just bought a 66-2, Class C engraved, but don't have it in hand yet. This one came with letter, box etc. and for a little less than $2k but if I saw yours in a shop today I'd pony up the $2k for it and not look back. Pretty hard to find anything S&W factory engraved these days for that price. I'll include a couple pictures of mine from the seller for comparison.

No pinned barrel! I didn’t even notice..it’s recessed so I assumed it was pinned and the dash 1 series is before the pinned barrel phase out. So I thought. No pinned barrel. I’m getting my money back! Ha! It must be one of them transitionals as I think some people call them.
