Default 1962 Vintage 28-2 with Double Stamped Grip

I recently acquired this LNIB 28-2 4" shipped in 1962.

The curious thing is the right grip is double stamped with the correct serial number of the gun plus the number from a different earlier gun (S313829). Font looks the same so I think they are both factory stamps. Anybody seen this before?

SMith & Wesson 28-2 S/N S225414 - Album on Imgur

Thanks!

Yes, I've seen another set or two stamped with two different numbers. No idea why though.

I have seen that several times.
Best guess:
Order comes in for a 28 with Target Grips. None in the vault. Solution- pull a gun from vault, remove magnas, put Targets on, ship gun.
Use removed magnas later on a gun they are a close fit on. Money saved and money earned.

I have one of the approximately 1000 Model 1917 produced right after WW II with double numbers. I was told, by those in the know, they were refitted from old stock to my gun.

That's my guess too.
S&W wasn't in the habit of throwing things away!

Here's my 15-1 with double stamped stocks.

Yes, I like this, makes perfect sense.

Thanks for the input all!

Interesting to see two sets of double stamped stocks. I can’t offer insight on that, but in your original post you typed that the second number was an earlier gun and typoed. S313,829 would be a 1968-69 shipped gun and later. But to my eyes, both stamps start with a 2? And that jives with what you said about 1962 shipped gun.

Yes, that was a typo on the OP's part. The serial number was clearly S213829.

I had Roy Jinks check the serial number of my double stamped 15-1 (post #7) and it shipped in May of 1962.

I thought they (S&W) would line out one s/n when they stamped a new one on the stocks. I know I've seen that.

My Model 36 has two numbers stamped on the right stock. Both are close to the Model# but not THE number. If I leave the stocks on I don't see them. It was a Punta Gorda gun, so there's that.
