Default Favorite S&W .22 Revolvers

When someone asked me what is my favorite S&W 22 caliber revolver I said I have two. Here they are, one has fixed sights and the other adjustable sights. Both are over 50 years old. The Model 18-3 is the newer of the two.
The friend I was having the discussion with thought I'd be saying my Model 617 or 63 would be my favorite. And while I like those two Smiths the older blue ones are IMO better looking and more fun to shoot.

Is that a 'Model Marked' Model 45?

Model 45-2?

If those are the correct stocks then, with the diamond, it's probably a no dash Model 45.

Can't be anything but a Model 45.

Oh you've opened a can of worms now. But I'll play. Hard to pick A favorite but SOME favorites are:

A Combat Masterpiece with extra 22 Mag cylinder.

A no dash M48 and a 617 Mountain Gun.

And yes, what is that fixed sight one?

Of my Smith & Wesson's the 17-4 followed very closely by my 18-3. One that I love equally as much as my 17-4 is my Dan Wesson model 22 with 6" heavy/vented barrel shroud. Unfortunately, I have no photos of that one. I did have an FFL friend, who once offered me the 5 screw postal model. Marked on the back strap with "PO Dept" for $3000 but condition wasn't there for that kind of money. I declined.

Shows you how much I know… never knew about the 617 Mountain Gun. Now I “need” one to match my Mountain Revolver!

Good luck finding one, as far as I know there are only about 40 of them and no one seems to know why they exist. They were built in 2012 but didn't show up for sale until 2016. The last time I saw any for sale, it was a pair, with the asking price a mere $20k. Maybe bdGreen will sell you his.

The early post War K22s with tapered barrel and narrow rib. The finish is the early semi-matte blue and the action is smooth as silk. Yep, it's an easy choice for me.

Pre-18 K22 Combat. Not pristine. It’s got wear on it that makes a great woods carry piece.

First is an 18-3 with TS, TH and smooth TT, RR & WO and the trigger stop. One hole groups at 10 yards are pretty easy with it.

Second is a pre war I frame .22/32 H.E.

Third is a well finish worn first year production .22/32 Kit Gun model of 1953.

This is my favorite Model 18-3 that I like to shoot. I’ve got a particular Model 17-3 that I favor also.

The Model 45 even with its fixed sights is surprisingly accurate. Being somewhat scarce I don't shoot it a lot, perhaps twice a year. That said it is still one of my very favorite 22 revolvers. Thanks guys for the comments and for sharing your favorite S&W .22 caliber revolvers.

I am the odd man, I have yet to find a S&W 22 rimfire that I like.

The Model 45 does look nice.

I like N frames so I am holding out for the Registered Magnum.

Three great 22 shooters. K-22 Outdoorsman (1939), K-22 Masterpiece (1947 "LERK "), and a K-22 Combat Masterpiece. Very different shooting characteristics, and all very fun to shoot.

Only have 1 .22 revolver. S&W Model 17-2, shipped 1964. Couldn't believe how accurate with bargain ammo. Have not put any quality stuff through it. Bob

Your question touches upon my heart! My favorite S&W .22 revolver is a gorgeous 18-3 that I purchased in 2000. It came to me in just about as new condition. From the day I bought it, I have fired this revolver just about weekly, sometimes multiple times in a week. I have bought and fired .22 LR ammo by the case through it. I have used it for anything and everything. With it I have learned how not only to shoot well in SA but also to become a fair hand with DA shooting. This revolver has been used to teach my daughters how to shoot a handgun. If I live long enough, this revolver will serve to teach my grandchildren how to shoot a handgun. It is the single most accurate S&W revolver of any caliber I have ever owned. It has a pristine pair of stunningly beautiful S&W K-frame target grips. Just a joy to my eyes. Sincerely. bruce.

My one and only .22lr revolver is this 1980-ish model 63. I shoot it at least once a month and sometimes twice.

Like this gentleman above, currently my only .22 rf revolver is a pristine model 63. I borrowed a finish chamber reamer and spent one evening cleaning up the charge holes.

I have three Smith & Wesson .22s that I would hate to part with.

Of the three my favorite is the top one, a Pre-45 .22 "Post Office" revolver. It isn't because it is rare but because in so many ways it is just right. I like K frames with 4 inch barrels. For packing and knowing around I prefer fixed sights. Best of all mine is in a condition that it isn't safe queen.

So the Pre-45 gets the nod. The Pre-18 comes in a very close second and the K-22 Masterpiece bring s up the rear.

The Model 45 should have been a regular cataloged item. I think it would have sold well.

Some great photos of very nice S&W rimfire revolvers. Being an old man now I find it really enjoyable spending a day at the range with an assortment of rimfire firearms. Thirty years ago I enjoyed a day at the range shooting Magnum boomers but as I approach 80 I don't enjoy the heavy recoil like I once did. Fortunately shooting is something we can enjoy as long as we're healthy enough to still see the target and pull the trigger. This has been a very interesting and fun thread, so much so I'm thinking about starting another. Stay tuned. Smith & Wesson Model 45-2 First Shots. - YouTube
I started a small YouTube channel years ago mainly for my friends so usually my half *** videos are very short and rather amateurishly done.

My 17-6, 4" hands down. While I enjoy shooting my earlier Model 17's and 18's & J frames, the 17-6 is the most accurate (for me) of the 30+ S&W revolvers I own.

I own several .22 pistols, but only one .22 S&W revolver.
It's a weirdo anyway, because it is a .22 ......thet is not a true .22

Of course most of members know this model, a M53 .22 Remington Jet. I'd define it as a .22 because it has his spare cylinder also, with long rifle chambers ( is it the correct term? sometimes I see they are named charging holes).

My early post-war K22 is by far my favorite.

Right now I favor my new 17-1. Thought I would never find one. Now I want an 18-1.

Here it is with non-relieved smooth targets. I know the stocks are a little early for a 17-1, but targets are targets.

Hard to come by is right. I've never seen one in person.

Default 22 Caliber Revolver?

Some of us have a different definition for "22 Caliber Revolvers"!
My favorite pair are these two!

A 16-4 and an early 22 Masterpiece chamber in .224 Harvey K-Chuk

Or maybe these two!

I bought this 71 year old Pre Model 18(shipped in Feb ‘53) about 4 years ago. It has become a regular on range trips. The kids and wife love shooting it as well. It’s a nice complement to my Model 41. It’s a bit on the finish challenged side, but it sure can shoot!

something about a 4" K-frame...
M18, from 1958 and 18-3 (1977), that once belonged to the Colorado Highway Patrol. Both are great shooters, but the bluing, on the older one is sooooo deep.

My favorite is whichever one is at the range with me that day...

If I ever have to choose only one to keep, it will be a tough day...
