Hello all, it’s getting really hard to find original or era correct stocks sold with the revolvers these days.1964/65 29-2. Anybody?

What makes you think anyone is "hoarding" them? Most of the original stocks are still on the guns they were originally issued on! There really are people who keep the original stocks on their revolvers!

I'm not so much hoarding them as I am waiting to find the right gun to put them on. When I was younger, I would comb the gun shows and pick up nice grips when I found them because I couldn't afford the guns.

Now I'm older and I make more money but the guns have gotten a lot more expensive too, so I still can't afford the guns I want. The gun shows around here are also nothing like what they used to be.

Ha! Just the roll I’m on it seems. Picked up a 28 no dash but, it has a really ice set of non relieved Diamond targets. These seem to be too early for the model I have S213. Love em tho, really nice. The 64/65 29-2 I’m looking at has football targets with no Diamond. That’s all, wasn’t meant to be rude and sorry if I offended anyone.

So on your first picture on the bottom row third grip in. That sure appears like the really old first targets made.The ones with roper influence. The way its so long under the trigger guard. Hard to see the checking.

Loving all sorts of other grips in there also from prewar magnas to cokes to smooth targets with flush escushions. Oh my!!

It's shocking to think back about how cheap stocks used to be!

I have a round butt N-Frame that I bought new circa 199x with Goodyears on it. Well, I wanted factory N-Frame Targets. I got a set for $7 at a local gun shop but they were for a square butt. Mind you, these were beautiful, pristine, if not perfect stocks.

I thought they didn't look right on my round butt gun, so I took them back for a refund. Yep, I got my big bad 7 bucks back.

Now they would probably go for $200 easy.

Clang444, it looks like you could finance at least a couple of the guns you desire by selectively selling some your stocks/grips. We’ll be scanning the classifieds here!

Strangely enough the stocks I've had the hardest time locating recently were plain old non-diamond, N-frame magnasf for a 1973 vintage model 27. I looked at lots of cokes, diamond targets, diamond magnas, pre-war this and that but no luck with what I needed. When I say looked I mean here on the forum, I probably could have cut my search short had I put some effort into combing e-bay and gun shows. My theory is the plain magnas are not in demand like some of the older "collector" types so tend to stay screwed onto whatever gun they started out with. Finally came across a nice pair from a forum member here, all is well.

Just a few castoffs that Bambi, Bullwinkle and Rudolf got tired of carrying on their heads...Folks such as Ken Driskill, Pat Grashorn and others were kind enough to shape into something to make my old boat anchors a little dressier...They move from gun to gun then back to the Tupperware for a while...Nothing to see here...Keep moving, keep moving......Ben

I remember the days. There was a show in north central Texas that could be relied on to have cheap S&W grips. Every show I would walk away with 4 or 5 sets for $5 a set. At another show out in Fredericksburg, I picked up 4 sets of early Diamond targets and presentation grips for $35 each, should have bought more. I bought a 5 screw M27 at the San Antonio Show with rubbers on it, walked 4 tables away and bought a set of N diamond Magnas for $25. But those days are pretty much gone.

Me too, but a third of what some will pay for a set of combats. I would have picked them up just to trade them for something I did want.

OP:

A lot of of original stocks simply got removed and replaced with rubber grips. The original stocks go in a box in the basement or garage. Eventually the gun is sold and than sometime later when cleaning out the house for sale, the box is found with the original stocks.

This was standard practice for me. I would buy a new gun and a set of Pachmayr grips to fit it at the same time. As soon as I got home. I would Take off the factory grips replace with the Pachmayrs and place the factory grips in the pachmayr box. Several years ago I sold several like new sets of K/L frame grips and a few N frame grips for cheap on the 1911 forum. Should have done my homework and figured out what they were worth. I wondered why they sold so fast

Some of my best finds have been in pachmayr boxes!

It's getting harder to find stuff but if you put in the effort stuff is still out there.

I have to assume in Mass you must be seeing some cool grips and such in estate and yard sales?

There's a well know purveyor of S & W grips who shall remain nameless who has single handedly sucked the market dry of S & W grips reselling them at premium prices. Not only that he's been known to give a well known custom grip maker orders for $10K of grips at a time. So much business that he is no longer accepting orders from us common folks.

Mine are always between my gun and my hand.........Why hoard something you can use?........Iffen you think I'm gonna give you $200 or more for a pair.........You're nuts.

Or in Hogue packaging. Just got these today. Mid - 1960's? Goncalo, diamond, not lacquered, small football and rounded checkering border. Just as I found them, haven't even cleaned them up.
