Model 53 inserts. 22 LR misfire safety protocol??
What’s the safety protocol when pulling a misfired 22 out of an insert of a model 53?
Probably no different from any misfire in a chamber, but being a newbie, I wanted to find out what the deal is with this.
Obviously, the last thing I want is for a 22 to go off in my hand while I’m pulling the round out of the insert with my thumbnail.
I doubt if this has happened much, but being a newbie, I wanted to ask here.
I’ve pulled several misfired 22s out of the inserts either while they are in the cylinder or out of the insert while it is out of the cylinder.
What should I be doing??
The 53 will misfire quite often as expected, when firing 22s.
I haven’t shot a rem jet neck down magnum yet.
Thanks

Maybe turn the 22LR round in the insert part way and try to fire again. That often works in other 22LR firearms. If you've waited some seconds to make sure there's not a hang fire I don't think there is any danger in removing the mis fire.
Lots more fun shooting the 22 Jets though. Shouldn't shoot many of the original factory 22 Jets as a steady diet will erode the forcing cone and do so fairly quickly. Load the rounds down a bit from the max and they're still fun to shoot, lots of noise and flash, but less risk of eroding the forcing cone. Pictures, we'd love to see yours. Enjoy.

The new PPU ammo is a little milder than the old Remington stuff. Of course that does not answer the OP's question but I think 22hipower pretty much covered it.

Lots of flash and noise for sure. I have never used my inserts or even the extra 22 LR cylinder so I don't know how the forcing cone erosion effects accuracy with LR.

The old rule of thumb is to wait 30 seconds before opening the action/unloading a mis-fire.

I've always hit 22 misfires at least twice before discarding them . Usually they go off the second time.

My 6" 53 is pretty accurate with the .22LR cylinder, although I don't use it much since I have a bunch of other .22s to shoot.

I think that is the pretty much the experience for most of us. I have four 53s and I'm yet to shoot a 22LR from any of them. Probably ought to do it one of these days though.

I've shot many Jets and very few LR's through mine. The inserts are a pain in the neck to deal with, and the Jets are a real hoot. If I had the spare LR cylinder, it might be more fun to shoot the rimfires, but, really, what's the point? A model 18 or 17 is probably, mechanically, a little more accurate, and definitely easier to deal with, if shooting LR.
To the OP, make sure that you are fully seating the rounds, in the inserts. I found, on mine, that I really had to push them into the inserts, in order to get reliable ignition. Check that inserts and chambers are clean. A little carbon build up will prevent round from seating all the way.
The usual protocol, for misfires, applies. Keep muzzle pointed down range for 30 seconds. Then, with muzzle in safe direction, remove inserts. Remove rounds from inserts.

I have only fired around 18 to 24 rounds of .22 LR in the inserts of my Model 53 but didn't experience any misfires. It was just an exercise to see how they worked and what it was like. The ammo was Federal bulk pack if I recall. I'm surprised to hear of any misfires with .22 LR given that the gun is set up to smack a centerfire primer good and hard when the switch on the hammer is set to the CF position. So it may have been faulty .22 ammo or other causes mentioned.
As a couple of members have mentioned the standard procedure is to keep the gun pointed downrange for 30 seconds in case of a misfire. I will just add the precaution that if you had a misfire in a .22 and ejected the round onto the ground and then had a hangfire there would be little danger when the round went off outside of a chamber. However a hangfire of the round while it is still in the chamber insert could be a lot more dangerous, especially if you were handling it when it went off. So be extra careful !

Actually the .22 rim fires take harder smack for reliable ignition. I have S&W and Ruger examples of the same model gun in rim fire and center fire. I can put lighter hammer springs in the center fire models than in the rim fire models and still have reliable ignition.

I shot a box of CCI standard velocity
out of my 53 when I first got it .
No misfires and accuracy was good.
Since then I have only shot Jet ammo in it.
