Ok, just noodling, as one popped up locally. I’m presently the proud owner of a nickel 19-4 6”. I like the gun, it’s a bit more of a range piece, because for me a 6” is too big for belt carry regularly. (Although it has found its way into a shoulder rig from time to time.). It’s a plain Jane 19, regular trigger, regular hammer, Patridge front sight, target stocks.

Locally, a 4” nickel with the Baughman sight has popped up on my radar.

Assuming we could come to agreeable terms, would you make a trade? Is there something about a 6” 19 that makes you say, “No way! Keep it!” ?

I waffle with these things all the time.

Curious what the crowd would do. (Besides just buy the 4” and keep them both. . )

I think the 4" 19 is just about perfect. I'd trade.

Id take the 4 inch first- and what dash number is the 4 inch. Id trade a -4 for an earlier gun in a second, also.

If you can afford to keep both, that is definitely option number one!

They are both -4’s. Should have called that out.

You'll end up with both barrel lengths (and more) eventually so might just as well keep the 6 and buy the 4.

For my own use, a 6” 19 or 66 just doesn’t fit a need. I find 4” to be ideal though.

I’d want a 4 for sure, with the 6 being a nice addition.

I'm big on "sets", as I have blued 19-3's in 2-1/2", 4" and 6". The latter two have the 3 T's. I would keep the 6 and add the 4. Then try to find a snub!

Both would be nice. I like 6" guns and always have. However a 4" is easier to carry but if you're open carrying it doesn't really matter. In a high ride holster a 6" can be accessed while seated in a car just fine. A 6" will take up more nightstand space if that's an issue. A 4" is easier and more concealable for concealed carry but for that a snubbie would be much better. For range or hunting and even plinking the 6" rules IMHO. You want both. I wouldn't let the 6" go.

I have both, a 4" blue, 6" blue with Patridge front sight-makes up for the M-14 I never got.

Keep the 6" then find a 4" and 2 1/2" to go with it. These are -4's.

Since both is not an option for the OP,
IMO I prefer my "Combat Magnum" be the 4" "Combat" length.
The extra 2" doesnt make the gun more accurate although the longer sight radius may result in more accurate results ..or it might not.

Condition, originality and revisions being equal I'd pick the 4" any day.

If your 6" model 19 shoots like a laser for you, I'd keep it and buy the 4". Neither is being made any more in that style, and you'd be 2/3 of the way to having all three barrel lengths. You're welcome!

Keep the 6 inch and buy the 4 inch Model 19-4. The 6 inch barrel has a longer sight radius, which makes it easier to shoot accurately, but the 4 inch will be a better carry revolver.

I agree that you should try to figure out a way to keep the 6", buy the 4", then go find a 2-1/2". Because, just look how happy they all are!

I have both so I'm not going to be much help to you. Mine are blue -3's.

Personally, I think everyone needs a 6" for the range. But of course, a 4" is needed as well for carry. Nevertheless a 2 1/2" is even a better carry. In any event a 8 3/8" is my personal favorite and that's what I prefer.

If cash is an issue, keep saving up. If you trade away the 6 incher you will regret it later on.

I would keep the 6inch and buy the 4inch if at all possible. Things like this are why I started making sure I have a slush fund available.

In my opinion they are one of the finest K frames ever made. And they are quite the sidearm. Ya can't beat a Model 19 in any iteration in which they're made. Some of us bought one.... then another.... and then another.... until one has acquired several as in 8 (I think)....!!!!!

I’m much more interested in the 4” than I am a 6” revolver.

Buy it you can always sell it. I have never regretted buying an S&W revolver.

If you are happy with your 6-inch 19, I’d not let it go. The configuration of your gun is no handicap. I prefer it that way, but maybe that is a minority view? I’ve no need for TH & TT on a Model 19, and the Patridge front sight is helpful if you shoot any distance. I’d keep your present gun and pay cash for the 4-incher.

+1. S&W is not making -4s anymore, and they are outstanding revolvers. Keep the 6", buy the 4", and keep your eyes open for a 2-1/2". Those will make a really nice start to a fine collection! I really like my minty 2-1/2" nickel 19-4, and my 4" 19-3 (Texas Ranger Commemorative, 1973) is one of my favorite revolvers...and yes, I shoot it!

I have a 6" nickel and a 4" blue. The 6" is a 3T, not the blue. I am only interested in completing the set with a 2 1/2" either flavor.

Keep the 6" and buy the 4" Generally these days I'm buying revolvers, not selling them!

I prefer 6" to 4" and bought both. Now I'd be unhappy with only one or the other. My 4" has many many rounds down range. The 6" has never been fired.
