My (New to me) Model 49 -
Won a nice Gunbroker auction last night for this Blue S&W Model 49 with original box and paperwork. Very pleased because this is a no-dash and dates to 1973-74. Winning bid was $635 plus shipping if memory serves.
I like the old Bodyguards. They certainly are a bit of an odd duck, but the single action is available should the need arise. It looks like it needs a good cleaning but I'm happy. Another long-time, on the list gun that I now own.
What do you think? Did I do okay on the price?

I have one just like yours.
I think I paid a bit less, but that was 4 years
ago.
Price seems fair.
Not too high.

I bought this 49-no dash used in 1974. Carried it everyday as my second, off duty and undercover for 20 years. Then got a 649 which I've carried since.
Paid $75 for the 49, factory and Herrett grips, 2 leather holsters, 150 rds of WC ammo and 100 rds of 158 gr LRN ammo. I bought it from an FBI SA who had just gotten it back from their gun people in Quantico. The DA is smooth at 8 lbs. SA breaks at 2.5 lbs.
Currently it wears a Barami Hip Grip and is my gun to grab when making a quick run some place. My wife carries it most of the time.

Model 49
I absolutely love the old humpbacks. I've got a bodyguard
and a Model 49. Carried the Bodyguard as my backup and
off duty weapon, and to this day it's still my #1 choice for
EDC.
The Model 49 is from 1983 and have been trying to sell it
locally for several months but so far no takers.

Very nice. I’ve never owned one but the Humpback is about the only J frame I really lust after.

We love pictures, so here goes.
The 649 is my wife's gun.
The picture on the right is an electroless nickel 38-2.

Back when I was looking for a .38 to conceal carry, I looked hard for one of these. I liked being able to have SA available to me. Couldn’t find what I wanted in the timeframe I had, so ended up getting a Model 642-2 at a good price point.

Mine is an '81 and was my duty back-up and off-duty revolver from '82 through 2001. The price you paid was a good deal fore sure!

A good deal for sure. Probably the ugliest revolver I own, and probably the last one I would sell. When they are wheeling me around the nursing home, that thing will be in my pocket.

I only got one recently and I really like it for what it is. I paid $450 plus another $35 to transfer it, and it didn't have correct stocks or a box and it sure isn't perfect. But it shoots dead on and is easy to carry.
It is a 49 no dash from June, 1965. I really splurged on the leather.

I consider the humpbacks to be the ultimate pocket gun. One of my 649s is alway in my pocket when I head to town.

I thought the M49 was kinda ugly back in the day so I bought a M36. After awhile I saw the genius in the design and I bought the first M649 I ever saw and carried it as a backup weapon until I bought my M940. I now think the M49 is one of the best looking revolvers S&W has ever made.
Fair deal on a nice revolver, OP.

I bought my humpback Model 38 Airweight from a Texas LEO twenty years ago. He had carried it as a backup to his Kimber .45.
I like the option of the single action feature.

I always thought the humpbacks were ugly and never gave them a second look. I had a 337 and an M&P340 that I carried in my pocket for several years. Neither one were all that pleasant to shoot because of the light weight. I sold the M&P340 and found a high condition 649-2 in a local shop. I like it very much. I also just purchased a 432UC that may just be the best snubby of all time.

I bought my No Dash 49 in the late 90's about $169. Refinished with a Teflon coating called Metal-life. It's been my EDC for about 20 years. I've never pulled it from my pocket, but reaching for got me out of hot water 3 times!
At my farmhouse I had a 30-year war with invading raccoons. I have shot them off the gutter several times, running on the ground a few times and once through narrow gap in the limbs straight up 35 feet (right between the eyes!)
I guess you could say they won, I killed over 200 and they are still coming.

Yes, they are Guy Hogues and they make the gun very manageable.

I already posted my 49 in #3. I carried it everywhere, everyday for 20 years.
In 1995 another dept was going from revolvers to autos and they were selling their revolvers to their officers. Their range officer called and asked if I wanted one of their 649s. They had 3 that had never been issued. He was buying 2 and offered the 3rd one to me. $150. I started carrying the 649 and the 49 went into the quick grab going out the door status.
When I retired in 2006 my wife fixed up the 649 which she thought I'd put in a retiree display box. It was a very nice thought except putting it in a display box meant I wouldn't be carrying it. No way that was happening. It's too nice to carry to put in a box. So I still carry it today just like the day she fixed it up.

And just like both Klaus Kinski and Lee Van Cleef, the S&W Humpback left no friendly pretentions, just the impression of being all business... ...Ben

Took me until I was 70 to finally find one of these in decent shape. It's got a ding on the front sight but otherwise pretty good. It's one of the few I've shot recently & it works like a charm. OP's 49 is unobtanium around here although I haven't been scrounging around too much.

The Saigon chief of police like the old hump back. His was the Airweight version. Here he is dispatching a Viet Cong guerilla during Tet-1968. I was in basic training at Ft. Polk at the time.
