Smith 586-2 laser engraved
I came across this 357 yesterday and had not seen one before. With a little investigative work I was able to uncover is that it is some sort of factory laser engraving. Could not find out when, how many, or pricing.
Unfortunately there was no box. Condition is very good with very little use shown.
For the more knowledgable... Could someone enlighten me as to the timeline, numbers, and value? Other than being a Smith, are they desirable?
Thanks All.

Other than the beat up side plate screws it doesn't look too bad. You sure that engraving is factory? The 586-2 came out in 1987 with the -3 starting in 88. I'd be really surprised if they were doing laser engraving that early. Fiber lasers weren't invented till about the year 2000.

Thanks for the response. I verified it is indeed a 586-2. I found another sold thru Collector Firearms. It was described same as this one.
That one sold for 1295 but had the case. It is identical to the one I'm looking at.
Now I really don't know what the fageezy it is. The serial prefix is BAD++++. Ironic I guess. The engraving(?) looks the same as what is on my Mountain Guns.

Sorry for the double post. My fingers ran ahead of my brain-again
Apparently this artwork (?) was applied to some 586-2 and -3. I think laser engraving is giving too much credit. Perhaps laser etched. I even found one online identically etched in nickel. There were a couple of posts here on the forum but still limited information stated anywhere.
Should someone have info, I would like to see it. Unless there is something that would ring the bell, I think I'll pass on it. Thanks

Here is the S&W Brochure on the "Engraving" - it is done with a laser... There were a bunch of them done.
You could also send your gun back and have S&W "engrave" it...

I agree when the word "engraving" is questioned if laser-done. That's no engraving, it is printing. The same difference you find between a paper poster and a painting.
A gun hand engraved is art

For perhaps a decade or so starting back in the 80s, Smith and Wesson revolvers had a flyer included in the box that offered multiple styles of laser engraving.
You could return your revolver to the factory and they would do the job for you and it was a very reasonable price. Back then it was probably in the area of fifty or seventy five dollars
I wish I could remember where I had that flyer, I would scan it and post the image
