Default S&W Presentation Box find

Well at an online auction I found this gem (with a bunch of other stuff for a total of $31.25 (I am not kidding.)

Do you think I need to clean it up more?

I cleaned the top of the box (as you can see) with water and cloth.. I could do all of it but it is the inside.. do I need to restore the felt or leave it as-is?

Yes looks like a 6 inch 29 .44 slept in it. I can also get a newer bore swab and make it mint if need be.

Thanks for any help!

Nice acquisition , I got lucky years ago and bought a blue 4" Pre M29 presentation box at a gunshow, A local Colt collector had a bunch of colt boxes for sale and one lonesome blue presentation box. I asked how much and he said $15.00, I don't think he realized what he had.

I did pretty much the same thing at one of the Bastrop shows, Lyle...Walking the aisles a vendor of my acquaintance motioned me over to show me a S&W case...He said a customer just dropped it off...He asked what it was worth, to which I said, "Is $25 OK?"..."Sold" he said, but it wasn't until I got home that I realized it's for a 5" N--frame...I still display it with my 5" Model 27-2......Ben

You did great! That type of liner is generally found with cracks and holes in them. You have found a 6", not a 6 1/2" which also came with that type of liners. These were used from approx. 1975-1978. You could improve the case by lightly sanding the exterior and apply a very light coat of Tung Oil finish. The Mahogany is very dry(because of age) so it will absorb the oil finish very fast. Often it requires a couple of coats of finish to bring back the sheen. Leave the finish dry between coats, at least 24hrs, then lightly sand and apply another coat!

Clean it up as best you can to look factory new. I had a perfect one a couple years ago that I sold on ebay. I was shocked when it brought around $350.00.

If you want the box to look minty, send it to jcelect. He's done two for me. They are killer.

You did great with your purchase! Joe (jcelect) is one of our Forum's outstanding craftsmen, and he specializes in refurbishing presentation cases- you can trust his comments. He's done several cases for me and I've been extremely pleased with the results. I'm also surprised that the flocking and liners inside the case are as nice as they are. I would recommend that you not store a revolver in the case because it may accelerate the deterioration of the liners/flocking, and may actually deposit hard-to-remove flocking onto the revolver. If you're a good DIY guy, you should be able to rejuvenate the case. If not, send it to Joe. Good luck!

Be very careful with the lining on these boxes. The lining will dry and crack and stick to the surface of your weapon. I have several different types and after damaging one of my weapons, I replaced all of the interiors (top and bottom) with a dry open cell foam. No further problems. It may detract slightly from the value of your box but it will save the finish on your investment.
