Couldn't pass up this model 58
Purchased a model 58 with box at auction. Gun's in very good condition. Guessing late '70's manufacture. My question is about the grip. Is it actually the correct one? The seller was unsure & I can't decipher the markings on the box.

Great find !!! A beauty. Yes it should have Magna (service) grips thus the “S” marking on the Bo’s label.
Those targets don’t fit very well. I might be mistaken but I might have read the model 58 had Magnas specific to that model ?
I owned one briefly around 1975/76. Police trade in from San Francisco.

Like Truckman said, they would be the PC version of the N magnas. Instead of a flat bottom to the grip it would be rounded.

The original stocks for all Model 58s and 520s were the P.C. Magnas pictured in the post just above. To the best of my knowledge these were the only N-Frame revolvers ever issued with the P.C. Magna stocks. Because of this they are difficult to find!

I owned a M57 revolver 40 years ago that had those grips. I do not think they are appropriate for a Model 58 however they would be considered an upgrade.

Nice 58! The Nframe PC magnas can be found, but they will cost a bit. Were it mine I'd slide a set of stag magnas on it while you search!

The 520 had N PC magnsa as well. It's much less common than the 58.

Just wondering if they could be ordered with Target Stocks back then. I know this box specifies "standard" as noted above.
I have one with TS that look like they are from the same period as the gun. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch to surmise that the dealer changed them before he sold the gun when new.

My M58 came with the Magnas to which I later added an Old School Tyler T-Grip.

Everyone is correct. However....the official name is NOT PC magnas but Modified Magnas. Just like the model 64 no dash does NOT have a pencil barrel, it has the standard taper barrel (as opposed to the heavy or bull barrel).

The larger Targets are more ... "shootable " but , not the original grips that came with the model 58 ...
They should be PC ( Modified ) Magnas ... see post 13 for photo ... my model 58 , my avatar , came with the Magmas and a aluminum Tyler T Grip Adapter set up ... Carried by a Louisiana Motorcycle Police Officer .
When I found how valuable these grips and now also the Tyler adapters have become ... I replaced them with a set of Ahrends Retro Combats ...
I still shoot it and the dark red cocobolo grips Kim made are much more "good looking " !
I sure do love the work Kim Ahrend did with grips !
Congratulations on your find ... the Model 58 is my Favorite Shooter .... You Gonna Love It !

BTW, Jim Supica, in the SCSW, refers to the stocks on the M-58 and the M-520 as "PC style grips".

I miss SP...he was a wonderful curmudgeon! And, not surprisingly, absolutely correct, at least most of the time. As I recall he labeled the Model 58 as useless......

That box indicates your Model 58 was shipped with Plain Clothes Magnas. The PC Magnas had the rounded bottoms so as to be less likely to print under a covering garment.

Possibly late 1977, but yours is probably somewhere around 1976. N200000 range covers 1974-77, and M58 production ceased in 1977.
The rounded-bottom PC magna is the correct stock. It's correct that the M520 and M58 were the only N frames with these stocks. The ones on the M520 aren't quite as nice, the feel is a bit more squared than rounded on the portion you hand grips. You don't see it easily, but you feel it when gripping them. The M520's weren't manufactured until two years after the M58 was discontinued.

mudbug, if you are looking for "correct" stocks I should warn you, they are not very commonly seen on the secondary market due to points made above. S&W only supplied them on those two models, neither of which were in production for very long, relatively speaking.

I think you will find a set. I just sold the set I posted (black inserts) a week or two ago for $75 and I have seen them on eBay. There actually is a damaged set on there now. You will be looking for the silver inserts so either from a M58 or M520 of the correct time period will do.

Snagged this off GB near a year ago...1973vintage.
It was strapped with some N frame combats
pealed those and sold them.
Found these on the "bay" for $70.00
Keep looking they are out there.

This is the wood on my M57, OP’s slightly older cousin made in ‘73 I believe by its serial number. Would they also be used on the M58s later in the decade? They look the same but don’t seem to fit quite right on that 58; they could just be a little loose. I know yinz said they were supposed to be originally different on the gun but would the frame be different at the grip between the two guns? Wondering, that’s all.

Adding on to this, I took what member @A10 said and replaced those stocks just now with these stag ones that I bought from a member on this forum! They look and feel phenomenal!

They are N frame stocks and would fit but would not be the correct style. M57 came standard with GA Target stocks, M58 came with walnut PC magna.

Sort of beating a dead horse here; but attached are photos of the end of your box, mine, and my nickel plated Model 58. It quicky became my favorite revolver. It's awesome. I find the thick Magnas that came with it to fit my hands perfecty.

The hammers should be the same. I think the spur on the M58 in that picture may be bent ever so slightly, or it could be the camera angle.

Could very well be, I will have to pull them out and check. The 58 is said to have been a Louisiana Department of Corrections gun so it could have been bent while on duty. There is LDC stamped on the 58.

Agree. If you want to add anything to the magnas and still be “correct,” it would be finding the correct size Tyler T-grip on eBay.

What is the origin of the terms "plain clothes" or modified" Magnas? I can't find them in any of S&W's literature. Were they coined by collectors? Just curious?

Dang Bill!...We were hoping you would know...The earliest example I personally know of are those on my 3 1/2" Model of 1950 .44 Target originally shipped in 1953, but I believe these, although numbered to the gun, were modified after leaving the factory...The term itself is one I first became aware of after joining this forum...  ...Ben
