Surprise to me
Was at Lakeview, Or. show this past weekend. My wife took a walk around, came back to table and presented me with a M64 no dash 2 inch. Really nice shape. Go figure my wife would do that, complete suprise. Anyway, the front site has a yellow insert. I have seen inserts before, but was it normal for this revolver? Sn:1D42xx. Year of manufacture?

Being a fixed sight 2" revolver the yellow insert is almost certainly not factory.

That was very nice of her to spot a cool snubbie for you! You need to take her to the gun shows more often, no telling what she'd find! Congrats.

No way would I be able to get my wife to go to a gun show, let alone have her buy me a gun.
My 5 screw 44 Magnum (S130881) has an off white insert. The letter says no mention of the non-standard insert on the invoice. It concluded the insert was likely after market.

Wives like that are to be cherished!
Mine has caused me to buy two special revolvers, a 455 TripleLock (serial number 31) and a birth year 45 ACP Model 1950.

My wife is the best salesperson my LGS has. If I look at it, she's standing beside me saying "Get it...get it..." Once looking at a Python she was telling me that. I replied I have one. "So? I don't." Now she does.
To the OP. Congratulations. You'll enjoy it.

Anything besides red is highly likely to be aftermarket (never say never with S&W).

An old friend of mine sold those suede looking pistol cases at gun shows, and since he sold a lot, he marked them with a "3 for" price. A couple came to his table and the husband picked out two to buy. His wife picked up a third, but he said "we only have two pistols". She smiled and said "so far!" My kinda woman!

I agree probably the color yellow is probably after market, but I have never seen any insert in a m 64. What year was revolver made? Thanks for all the answers.

We'd love to see some photos of that 2 incher. This is my 3" Model 65 with a red insert (I have not lettered it so I don't know if it is factory)...
I recall seeing S&Ws out there that letter with yellow inserts from the factory. With S&W, you can never say never...

It looks like there are all kinds of cool wives out there!
I was once hot on the trail of a Model of 1926 TARGET------one of those conventional wisdom says "less than 200 were made".
I'd returned home from a show to be met with the Boss Lady's usual "Did'ja get anything?" "No, but I saw a gun I've never seen before------and I can buy it for (A LOT)!!" "Is it worth it?" she asked. "I don't know---I saw one advertised several years ago for more---and it wasn't as nice as this one." Then she said, "Well why don't you just go ahead and buy it?" And I said, "YES MA'AM!"

In 1975 I was the first kid on the block with an M67. I drew it on a felony traffic stop and hit the upper end of the barrel on the inside window frame of the open patrol car window, breaking the factory red ramp. Called S&W the next day, and (rightly or wrongly) was told the insert was integral (obviously) to the ramp, which was integral to the barrel, ergo the gun would need to be rebarreled. I'm not kidding. So I bought a toothbrush with a yellow handle and whittled my own, epoxying it in place. Worked great. In the nearly half-century since almost all of my handguns feature a dab of yellow paint or nail polish on the face of the front sight. Shows up much better than red against varied backgrounds.

Since we are telling wife stories, here's one for you.
15+ years ago I was in D.C. on a business trip. While I was gone, my bride went to a bazaar at my son's church. When I returned, she said, "I have a surprise for you." Then, she hands me a Highway Patrolman with a 6" barrel. She knew I was fond of the HP, but at that time I only had 4" units.
I asked where she got it. She said that at the bazaar, she bought a $5 ticket for a raffle and won the HP.
I still have the revolver AND the wife!
(In fact, in a couple months, we will celebrate 54 years of marriage.)

Obviously you've made wiser choices than I have, Jack...I do OK in choosing guns, but in the wife category, and to put it in a term popular in my days with the USAF, I screwed the pooch...Twice... ...Ben

54 YEARS?!!
HALLELUJAH!!! I finally found something I know more about than Jack does------being married to the same little old gal for a loooooooooong time!! It'll be SIXTY FIVE YEARS come the 14th of next month!
That's got to be some sort of record for something---being a glutton for punishment maybe?

I suspect there are a lot of those.
65. That's our goal. My folks were married for 65 years before Mom died. Dad lasted another 14 more months.

I did a few changes to the revolver. Changed the hammer to .375, and litened the springs some. 1.5 pounds single action and 8.5 pounds double action. Also new grips came and I added those, which I bought on ebay, from Thailand. Everything feels great and I shot it at 10 yds. yesterday and kept them in the black, half the shot double action. I am not a good shot, but this revolver has become my EDC.

The ONI (later NCIS) 4" RB model 19s from a special contract had factory yellow front sight inserts. They are the only non-red version I have ever read about, but as others have stated in the past, the factory would entertain doing any modifications if you were willing to pay for them.

I used to take my guns back to S&W in Springfield, and have inserts put in. I never did it, but yellow was an option if I wanted it.
ONI, NIS, then NCIS. My Dad was part of that agency for 25 years

In the 70s S&W had repair shops over most of the country. The one in Tampa Florida ran by Jim Fish would install a front sight insert on request. Question: if the insert was installed by S&W gunsmith is it still "Factory"?

Factory "authorized" or "trained" probably fits, if done after new. "Factory" to me implies original.
Cheshire and Perez was the largest such shop near where I grew up.
