Model 25-2 ACP swap cylinder for 45 LC?
Is it possible to swap out a 25-2 cylinder for a 45 LC cylinder from a -3 or -5 -7?
Thanks

The .45 ACP cylinder on the 25-2 is shorter than the .45 Colt cylinders, so no, they won't fit.

Good! This means I do “need” another 25.

I believe the 25-3 had a 45 Colt cylinder the same length as the 25-2's 45 ACP cylinder. I think swaps were OK, but I also think the 25-3 cylinders are hard to come by. Your cylinder can be converted to accept 45 Colt as well as 45 ACP with moon/half moon clips required.

A M25-2 cylinder can be fitted to a M25-3, as the M25-3 uses a shorter .45 Colt cylinder than the later (M25-5,-7) Colt revolvers. However, the headspace on an ACP cylinder is greater than that on a Colt cylinder and it will slide more to the rear before it hits the frame lug.

You could also fit a cylinder made from reaming an N frame 357 to 45 colt.
Any 45 colt cylinder fit to an 45 acp frame will also be about .035 longer to the rear. This means either the frame lug will need filed back that much or a nothch will need to be machined from the rear OD of the colt cylinder
The cut back frame luck is the usual method. This does allow the acvp cylinder to slop back that .035 while ejecting but the rounded tip of the center pin and the dimple in the recoil shield will smoothly slide it back forward upon closing

A -3 cylinder will work but they are unobtanium. The guy who said 45 Colt will work with moon clips (ericpolcrack) is wrong. That won't work.

Best course of action ... Two Guns ...
one in 45 Colt ( not Long Colt) and one in 45 acp .
Life's too short not to have two S&W's

I did a safe census yesterday, and counted 118 Smiths for display, plus a few for carry and one project gun...Those figures may see some adjustment after my scheduled visits to three local gun shows this weekend... ...Ben

I have an M1917 that was converted by a previous owner to also chamber 45 Colt using moon clips from TK Custom. An M1917 cylinder is virtually identical to that of a 25-2. The chambers were just reamed to accept the Colts. The TK custom clips are the same ones they offer for Model 29s people have converted to use moon clips for competition. 45 ACP still works with moon/half moon clips. The clips are needed with the Colt rounds to insure proper headspace.

I have a model 25-2 coming.
45 ACP.
So it needs moon clips.
I ordered some and they’ll be at the house.
Also got the two tools to put the ACP’s in and extract them.

If it's all by TK Custom, you chose wisely... ...Ben

Some one asked me how many revolvers I had. I told the truth. I don't know.

Actually I have a notebook that I try to keep all my guns listed in, but I have not updated it for a while and I can think of at least a dozen I have gotten since I last did so.
