Default S&W Model 37 - Date of Manufacture

Hello,
I'm new to this forum. I inherited a S&W model 37, .38 Special, five-shot revolver, with a 3 inch barrel. The serial number is 20J786. Can anyone please tell me the date of manufacture and estimated value? The bluing is in very good to excellent condition and has had very little use. I know for sure that it has not been fired in the last 30 years.

Nice "Airweight" 37 you inherited. Do You have the box or anything else for it?
The floating "J" serial number puts it in the '71-'72 era with yours likely being later '71. Prices vary and of course regional factors affect it too. With no box and in nice condition like that one it is around $500-600 around here. Check the frame under the barrel with the cylinder swung out to make sure it isn't cracked, a possibility with all Airweights. I have one like it but a bit older (flat latch) that I paid $325 for about eight years ago. Also shot very little.

Welcome aboard from 'ol Wyo.

We don't have access to manufacturing data from that era, but
based on checking others in the Chiefs database yours might have
shipped in October 1971 or thereabouts.

Thanks for sharing your Chiefs Special with us.
