Default Model 28-2 5” for sale?

Apparently only 500 made?? 300?
I saw one for sale in Boise ID today.
Buckhorn pawn and gun.
Just in case anyone is looking.
Pretty rare.
It had ivory grips and looked pretty clean.

I don’t think they made a 28 in Nickel? At least I’ve not seen one

The small number of 5” model 28s were made for the FL Highway Patrol, in nickel finish.

I would only buy the 28-2 if it had a letter verifying the 5-inch barrel and blue finish or with an agreement of return if it did not letter.

I would buy it if it looked correctly done if the price was right. I love a 5" .357. Does the polish and blue match the frame? The top of the barrel isn't checkered is it? The lettering on the barrel centered properly?

It’s on their website under local listing section. The barrel looks polished blue to my eye but then again I do wear glasses. As far as the asking price goes I’ll see what others think about that.

Found the listing. I don't think the 5" barrel is a factory original in that length. Might not be factory work to shorten a 6-incher, either. Scant description says "38-40" and the two pictures reveal little else.

$1,995

The lettering on the barrel seems reasonably well-centered to me.
Stocks look too shiny to be real. That's a lot of money w/o a letter or other documentation.

The grips look to have some yellowish to them in the picture, so may be real ivory. The lettering on the barrel does look centered but would look exactly like that if a 6" barrel was cut down to a 5" barrel.
If I have time this weekend, I will drive over there and check it out.

Ah.. I did neglect to mention that this one came in as part of a collection. There is another Smith that has the same ivory stocks. Same owner obviously and I wish I could remember what the other one was. Maybe a 27 or a 28 6”?? They can tell you at Buckhorn.

Hmmm...
A Highway Patrolman chambered in .38-40 and we're questioning if the barrel length is original? It also looks like there's a roll pin holding the front blade to the base.

The front sight does not appear to be correctly shaped to be a factory front sight.

Cool gun, but S & W hasn't made a .38-40 for well over a century. Did I mention it's a cool gun?

"38-40"

I just assumed the dealer bungled the description.

Without the opportunity to examine the revolver, a case like this naturally gives rise to unbridled speculation.

It would be an interesting gun to own, and I would consider it but nowhere near the price listed. Regardless of the caliber it’s most likely not a factory offering. And I agree with stansdds that the front sight is definitely not S&W.

And I thought my photography was amateurish.

On the other hand, I bought a 28-2 listed as 44 special. It's one of the finest conversion you could imagine. Extremely accurate too. I would stay away from the one above.
