I have a few Model 66 revolvers, including this Model 66 (no dash) shipped in 1975 with a stainless rear sight:

What is the “harder stainless” produced in 1970?

Welp. Apparently the “s&w guru” that gave me the info was wrong.

looks to be the norm. Most don’t have a clue.
…..

Anyone know the real story with these ???
The "no-dash" Model 66 was one of the few S&W stainless steel revolvers that came with factory-installed stainless-steel adjustable sights.

The first engineering change for the Model 66, the Model 66-1 revolvers, replaced the stainless steel sights with blued sights.

Many people at that time felt that the blued sights presented a better "sight picture" under most conditions than the earlier stainless-steel sights.

I don't know if that really addresses your question, but that's my 2 cents.

;)

OK I’ve gone back and looked at notes and a PM from an actual expert. There were three changes made DURING the production of the no-dash Model 66 revolvers. Sometime after mine was made and before the 66-1 came in (1977?), the rear sight was changed to black, the gas ring was moved to the yoke, and a red insert was added to the front sight. Being Smith & Wesson, those changes did not happen all at once.

My understanding is that my Model 66 sans-dash was one of the last to have the stainless rear sight. The gas ring is still on the cylinder. No red insert in front sight ramp.

This might be interesting about the gas ring change:

Guess I should’ve asked here first..That’s what I’m finding now.
I already found the thread on my 29-1 here couple weeks ago , so I know the real deal with that.

Didn't the early stainless revolvers also have stainless hammers and triggers that tended to wear out fast? The change was to the flash chromed finish that was tougher.

The Model 66s made in May 1970 tested the tooling for the new stainless .357 Combat Magnum. These revolvers are like those made in 1971 except they have a target hammer and a serial number beginning with K949100. I am sure your Model 66 dates to 1971 or later when the new model was announced and shipments began.

It appears to be a ‘72-‘73 4K
