Sorry if I'm in the wrong forum but I'm a newbie here. Looking for a DOM for my 4-screw Mod 29 serial number S100300. It had some wear on it when I bought it in like the early 80's so my gunsmith sent it to Smith for a re-blue. Any ideas on value would be appreciated also. Thanks.

Welcome to the Forum! Lots of .44 Magnum and Model 29 fans to be found here as well as a wealth of information. As Doc44 says, please recheck the s/n on the butt of the revolver under the wood stocks. Is your revolver marked "Model 29" in the cylinder yoke area (when the cylinder is swung open)? If so, it's an early 4-screw Model 29. If not, then it is a late 4-screw .44 Magnum. S&W started model marking their revolvers in 1958, and that's when the ".44 Magnum" became the "Model 29" (beginning around s/n S184000). You didn't mention barrel length (measure from front of cylinder to the muzzle), and that can add to the value. Your revolver would have originally shipped with oversize checked diamond center Target stocks (aka "Coke Bottle" stocks), and having those also dramatically affects the current value. Do you have the original blue/black presentation case for that revolver? That's something else that affects value. It's a shame that your .44 Magnum was re-blued, but often a S&W factory re-blue does not dramatically reduce the value. Just to give you an idea of current values (from the "Standard Catalog of S&W 5th Ed."), a 4-screw .44 Magnum in Excellent condition is worth $3000 and VG condition at $2000; whereas the 4-screw Model 29 in Excellent condition is valued at $2500 and VG condition at $1750. If you can provide some pictures and additional information our Forum gurus can better price your revolver. Hope this helps. Enjoy!

I just had a thought…..are these prices for the gun only, or the complete package?

The serial number provided is for a .357 Magnum shipped in 1953. A Model 29 with serial number S199367 probably shipped in late 1959 or early 1960.

Quite the dummy here on posting pics. Don't know how to find the URL of the pics I want to post! I could text them.

Here are a couple photos of members gun.

It's a good looking gun, and appears to my non-expert eyes to be a quality re-blue...I notice a R/R front sight, is the rear W/O?...:)...Ben

What leads you to believe it's a re-blue. Not disagreeing, just wondering what you see.

It would be nice to see the reblue marks from the factory on the frame.
