Bob, the expert, will be along soon to confirm or deny, but I suspect this one is from 1971.

The barrel is the nominal 2" length. Most often the actual measurement is 1 7/8".

thanks for your information...hopefully I can narrow that down but I appreciate your response...1 7/8" is what I measured...

I had read that mine might be a "roving/floating J" serial from 1970/71/72 so your information lines right up with that...thanks

is there a way to know if mine is a factory nickel Model 36?...someone told me if it has an "N" marked somewhere but I have not seen that anywhere...further, many photos I have seen of factory nickel show a color case hardened hammer and trigger whereas mine has nickel'd hammer and trigger...

Default Nickel 36

Look at the rear of the cylinder. The extractor star should be blued and there should be a capital N stamped in the nickel near one of the chambers.

thanks Redwood32R2...

blue'd star extractor but no "N" along with the nickel'd trigger and hammer leads me to believe this is not a factory nickel'd Chief...still appears to be a good job with no peeling or anything adverse in it's presentation but for handling light scratches in line with it's age...

The nickel trigger and hammer (and no N stamp) are dead give aways. Work done outside S&W factory.
