Seeing that the M28 is the poor brother of the 27, did it ever come with a wooden presentation case, the 28 that is?

Hey Pilgrim
The model 28 was developed as a duty weapon with the primary focus of sales on law enforcement. The cops didn't need or want presentation cases! However, S&W sold the cases as an aftermarket item also and I would imagine if a private party ordered a mod 28 in a case they would ship it that way. To quote Mr Jinks, "S&W was in the business to make money not collectors items"!

That's about what I figures. Thanks for the confirmation.

So if someone did get a case, what would the insides look like for a 28 no dash made in 1960 ?

If you wanted to get a case that would fit your 28, you would need to buy a clamshell case made for a Model 57 in 1965-66. The case would not be "period correct", but the only clamshell case made in 1960 was for a Model 29 with a 6 1/2-inch barrel. If your 28 has a 4-inch barrel, a clamshell case made for a 4-inch Model 29 (in 1960) would do nicely. You would need to put target stocks on your 28.

Hey Pilgrim
This is what a "clam shell" type case looks like!

Like Doc44 posted, this is for a 6 1/2" mod 29.

Thanks guys. My 6 inch 28 apparently came with diamond targets but it appears someone changed them to diamond magnas.

I'm on the look out for diamond targets (ouch, my wallet) and a case, now that I know what case I need.

I hope I can find someone who needs the magnas and will accept a trade of some kind.

Thanks again.
