Question for the Smith&Wesson gurus. When I open the cylinder on my 617-1, the model and serial number is stamped on the inside of the frame. Then on the inside of the crane is hand scribed a 3 digit number. What is this number supposed to represent?
Thanks for any input.

I believe that is an "assembly number" user to keep major parts together when disassembled after they have been fitted during production.

Thanks for your responses. So, it doesn't necessarily match the serial number?

If it is inscribed - the numbers may match the last 3 of your serial number or another part number. Means nothing really.

Thanks alot, I was kind of concerned because it does not match the latter digits of the serial number and I was kind of concerned that maybe it wasn't the original cylinder. However, it is timed perfectly and locks up good and tight, and the initial shooting of the revolver indicates that it will have pretty decent accuracy. It's just too cold right now to confirm that for sure. I just tend to be a worrier.

Take the grips off and look on the butt end of the frame, on one side or the other. You will probably see those numbers inscribed there also.
That means that yoke was fit to that frame. They are factory assembler numbers so these parts don't get confused, should they get separated for some reason during assembly.

Hope this helps
