I just put money down on a 629-4 Mountain Gun for $430 in great(98%) condition complete with original box and papers. I know the 44 mag frame( or was it the internals) was beefed up to handle stress better at some point. Which engineering change incorporated that upgrade? During which years were the -4s made? Thanks ahead of time.

All the Mountain Gun model 629s I have seen have had the "durability package". SCSW says the endurance package came along with the 629-2E model guns.

I have shot a non-endurance package 29 for many years and it will stand a lot more magnum loads than I want to put through it.

Do Mountain Guns usually sell for more or less than the regular 629? The Blue Book doesn't make any distinction.

mrkurtz -

This might not tell you everything you want to know, but most of the upgrade history is here:

http://www.sixguns.com/range/SmithWesson44Mag.htm

Looks like the stronger upgrade came with the 629-3 and the blue 29-5, so a 629-4 should be just fine.

The 629-4 has the firing pin mounted on the hammer, and the 629-5 has the firing pin mounted in the frame. The 629-5 was the last series before the dreaded internal locks were added.

I won't argue with arfmel, but I think the 2E package was an interim upgrade.

If $430 is the total price for the gun, better run rather than walk to get it! That is about $200 or more less than they fetch on Gunbroker.com

I was told at the SHOT show one year by an S&W rep that the M-629-3 was the upgrade suffix.

mrk, $430 is a great price. Here is a picture of my 629-4 Mountain Gun. I have shot some 44 Special rounds threw it. Haven't tried the magnum ammo yet. Anyway here it is..

The 629-4 is my favorite shooter variation. It incorporates all the endurance package improvements, has .429" - .430" chamber throats, and has no MIM parts.
They were made 1993 to 1997.

The endurance package arrived with the model 29-3E in 1987, with a few more mods in 1988 (29-4)and longer cylinder stop notches and bolt block in 1990.
The 629-2E endurance package with hardened yoke/frame arrived in 1989. The 629-3 had the longer stop notch and bolt block added. Your 629-4 (1993)should have all the goodies.
Nice!

Do you think the thin tapered barrel will hold up to full 44 mag load? The cylinder latch on mine I think has the teardrop shape not like the one on jimmyjoes. But no lock of course.Mine has Hogue rubber grips.

A friend of mine bought a Mtn. gun the first year they were announced, 1989. Like Sonny said they only had the hardened yoke and radiused stud package. They were also the nicest looking Mtn. guns in my opinion. They had the nice black powder bevel on the cylinder and that really sharp looking frosted finish. Yes they will hold up to .44 mag loads, with the pencil barrel.

Your wrist will wear out long before the barrel - you might want to pick up some 44 special loads for it also.

Great price!! I picked up my 629-4 Mountain Gun two weeks ago (also with box and papers) for $650. Also with the new style cylinder latch. It looks unfired and it's the tightest Smith I own.
