I have a track on the 686 Plus without regard to dash number, boxes, or papers. They don't show up all that often. Here it is FWIW:
Smith & Wesson 686 Plus 2-1/2" Bbl Revolver in .357 Magnum, .38 Special, Plus P. Bluebook of Gun Values (29th Edition) indicates between $415 in 98% condition and $565 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 42 recorded prices using local and internet sources for this gun from $350 to $856 over a period of 1607 days ending December 2, 2008. The average price as of that date was $505. Current or last MSRP is $877.

Bud's Gun Shop has it priced at $594 delivered, NIB.

Those Bud's guns for 594.00 all have a lock though, and that kills the deal for quite a lot of folks.. If they had pre-lock guns NIB for that price they'd sell out faster than an AR15 on election day.. (Hey, I made a funny)

Allglock, IMO you could sell your -4 right quick for $500.00 (not including s/h) Probably more on an auction site, but then ya probably have to pay a commission of somekind to the house?

There isn't much of a difference in what the guns with or without locks sell for. Most buyers don't know enough to care. Only some forum folks and other enthusiasts may care enough to pay a slight premium for a lockless gun. and they are in a strict minority among buyers in general.

Bud's is not my recommendation, although they have a good reputation as far as I can tell. I use their prices as a sort of ceiling for what one can expect at the top end of used gun prices.

That being said, the average price I cited (and you posted as a probable quick sale) is not necessarily how I'd price the gun if it were mine to sell. Here's a chart showing the trends supported by the data. Notice the data average price is about where the trend line appears in March 2007. The trend line for December 2008 is pushing $540. I'd start around there exclusive of transfer, shipping, and insurance.

Depends on where , when, and how. I say you should get $450 to 550 out of it. I would ask $550 and take 5 for it.

I did a quick reprise on Auction Arms, Gunbroker, GunsAmerica, as well as some local sources before I posted. Reserve Not Met was a frequent reason for no sale on the auction sites, their buy now prices were at the high end of the range posted. Gunbroker prices are among my data sources. I only record completed auction from auction sites, so ones that don't sell don't count. Conversely, those that do sell do count and there isn't much to distinguish IL/No IL prices. I stand by my statement. If you can document actual data, I'll be glad to incorporate it.

If you want to get an idea of how small the minority is where the IL is a deal breaker, check the BATF&E Manufacturing & Export data for the Internal Lock years.

Dude, I aint disclaiming your data. I dont care one way or the other, nor do I need a flow chart to know what the goin price is.. (Especially not one with 5 guns sold over an 8 month period, there snowflake) I posted that the gun would sell "quick" at 500.00 and your figures show they average 505 or whatever, so not really sure what's got your tits in a knot in the first place? Also, when ya see a icon with a big green smile and a bunch of white teeth, it means take the comment with a grain of salt.. Oh, and if ya want to check some data, do a quick search of "Completed Auctions" for 686's on Gunbroker.com and tell us how many with a lock ya find "sold"..

I already checked the data, dude, as I pointed out.

As far as completed auctions are concerned, only completed auctions that sold are in my data, so if your premise were correct, my prices would include only auctions completed (sold) for guns with no internal locks. As it is, there's a mix. Only five of the forty two prices I collected over about 4-1/2 years called attention to the absence of the IL.

My comments to you are to offset your blanket statement about internal lock 686s not selling, it is incorrect, with or without the green, big toothed smile.

You can draw all the fancy graphs & charts you want, the LOCK does NOT sell anywhere near as well as pre-lock.
I work at a shop that sells both.
Condition, price & lock are the biggest 3 factors.
So far nobody has have come in and asked if we had a graph.
They have however asked for price, condition and if the gun has a lock.

So, your shop represents the world market. Good to know. ( backatchya) How do you explain S&W sales growth of IL guns?

I'm not a fan of the IL myself but the simple fact is they do sell anyway, maybe not to buyers with anti IL attitudes but they sell. I haven't got enough documented data to make a distinction between IL/NIL sales but I do have more than you've provided. Put up some documentation and I'll be glad to use it.

But, in reality, it's like taking the average of 42 used 1968 Camaro's and putting those prices in a graph. What's the point. Each one has a condition factor which is the most important factor when pricing anything anyway.
You just need to narrow that graph down is all.
You can't just say 42 used guns sold, so this should be the price.
I'm sorry, I retract that. I should not have said "You can't just say" because obviously you did just say.
But, back to reality, if you wanted to pull real world numbers, let's just look at the guns that have the same features, same condition, same location.....
I'm guessing from the way you price things you probably WERE an appraiser for Freddie Mac or Fannie May.

OK that settles it! $600 shipped sounds good to me.

The 686-4 was the 1st and only 7 shot revolver with the firing pin still on the hammer and the only model that has the firing pin on the hammer that is 7 shot. So I guess it would bring a much higher price then most others.

Anyway, I can help a bit here. I have bought three of this exact same model over the last year or so. The first one I probably paid too much, I really wanted one and hadn't seen one for sale in a while. The other two I think were more the going price at the time. All three I bought from GB. Here's my data:

3/07 - $715
3/07 - $599 (yes, right after I bought the first one I found this one at a much more reasonable price)
1/08 - $585
