I will start it off with this nice cherry model 10-5 in nickel from the Detroit PD with a 5" barrel.
I am curious how many will surface here and if they are different in barrel length from mine.
Peter.

What is that sap doing with that fine gun....they were never used by.....

Going back to at least the 1940s, DPD issued 5 inch nickel Colt Official Police or 5 inch nickel S&W M&P which later became the model 10 in 1957. The 10-5s were the last S&W duty guns bought.
The bureaus, and command got issued 2 inch nickel Colt DS or S&W M&P. Some blued 2 inch M&P were bought, but most are nickel. Later model 64s in 2 inch were bought. Those are the only two barrel lengths issued.
Officers were allowed to purchase and carry their own Colt or S&W DA revolvers in 38Spl or larger and supplied their own holsters, ammo and pouches or speed loaders. The S&W model 39 and 59 were also allowed starting in the 1970s.
Here's a post war M&P. I'll try to dig up some more photos.

WOW, Some real beauties coming out of the wood work, I would buy them all if I had the dough!
I NEED A 2"er now!!!
Peter.

Damn! This opens an old wound for me. I had one about 10 yrs ago. I paid $199. A beautiful DPD marked 5". Pristine.

Back then I didn't apreciate what it was as it was my only S&W back then. It was just a "clunky .38". I stupidly traded it off for something that I don't even remember. One of my biggest gun regrets. Ouch.

howdy , can some please tell me the width and length osf a factory box for detriot PD model 10-5 with 5 inch barresl??
many thanks robbt

These are really neat and everything, but y'all will have to pardon my ignorance. What's the difference in Detroit marked P.D. guns, and other marked P.D. issue weapons? I'd love to have ANY of these, but I don't see the added interest.

For that price I would have bought it also. I saw the guns abt 2 yrs ago and he was around 300.00. The cond was around 95 or better. Just didn't hit at that time and I know he still has them. I'll have to give him a call. Maybe he'll let me have the better of the two. Larry

WhiteCoyote-Nice collection. Most of the Detroit police revolvers don't do anything for me, but the two snubbies you have are fantastic. Nice to see more locals have great taste in handguns.

My computer, my opinion.

It is a way of "collecting" something, I live in Philly, and if the Philly PD had such a rich heritage of Smith and Colt revolvers, I would have them too!
You collect smiths?
Why not iver johnsons??
Peter

No pics but a friend of mine worked for DPD starting in 1971. He bought his own duty gun - a nickel 6" Python that he carried until they authorized semi-autos. As a detective he carried a Chief's Special.
