Thanks for bumping it Pre-64. I wasn't a member 2 years ago so hadn't seen this thread. It made for great reading. I've never been to Detroit so never saw this shop, but grew up going to similar shops and learned much of what I know from men like Jack Roy. Almost all of those types of shops are gone now.

Thanks for the bump----some wonderful memories recalled as a result of this post.

Jack's Shop was Hewitt, just west of Joseph Campau Avenue and north of the old Dodge Main plant, the same which was razed about 1980. Much of the site of the Dodge Main plant became the site of GM's Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant which started up in 1985----this is the same plant which has been in the news of late as GM has announced that the plant (even though it is barely 30 years old) is on it's list for (likely) permanent closure.

Default Jack Roy, old gun shop

I really enjoyed what everybody wrote about this old shop. In West Phialdelphia on S. 52 ed street where was a gun shop called Joffies. I was a kid at the time but I whould take a bus into the city to visit Joffies Gun Shop. He always welcomed me and had several racks on the sales floor full of long guns that he let me look thru. His wife usually worked with him. In 1968 he moved his gun shop to West Chester Pike in Upper Darby, because of the new restrictive gun laws in the city. His new shop was just as friendly as the old place. I went there many times and enjoyed my visits. Both Irv and his wife have since passed but they won't be forgotten.

An awesome story guys, thank you all so much for sharing. I wish places like this were still common but they are getting harder and harder to find.

A classic Smith & Wesson Forum thread, one worth re-reading whenever it gets bumped up.
