I purchased a six inch barreled M686-1 with the orginal box and paperwork two weeks ago. It is in nearly new shape and I spent last Saturday putting some rounds through it and realizing that I am extremely pleased with this revolver's ergonomics. If someone would please give me a date of birth for it I would really appreciate it. It has a serial number of AVA7xxx. Thanks in advance.

1986-87.

Does yours have an "M" stamped in the yoke cut?

No sir. But I did find that is has T34, then underneath that a sideways capital S, and finally underneath that the numbers 16778. Does any of that info mean anything? Thanks!

Those are inspectors marks and an assembly number, you'll also find the assembly number on the frame under the left stock. There was a recall on the early L frames, that's why I asked about the "M". Click on the link I posted above for more information.
