Following is a picture of my Dad's 28-2. Is this a nickel or stainless finish? The serial number is N50XXXX. Any idea as to its date of manufacture and appropriate value? I recall my father having an earlier version of this same revolver that he purchased used from a quick draw champion in need of some cash. I recall shooting that revolver with my father. Subsequently, the seller wanted to reacquire his old revolver and proposed trading a new revolver with a trigger job in exchange. This is the revolver he provided in exchange. I'm not sure if it has ever been fired. With that being said is this a potential shooter or is it better to make it a safe queen?

My 28 has a thinner trigger and the cocking piece on the hammer is also thinner.

Looks nice though.

To me it looks like the hammer and trigger have the same finish as the rest of the revolver. Not sure what that implies.

It has to be some type of hard chrome, but it sure the heck looks like stainless. Good looking piece!

Nice looking 28 ... unusual, but very nice. I agree that the hammer and trigger don't look like the original service type - more like a target trigger and semi-target hammer(?). Hard to tell from here - but I do like it.

Looks like hard chrome but i suppose it could be electroless nickle as well, hard to say without seeing it in person. Looks really nice whatever it is.

I would make it a safe queen if it belong to my Dad. It has the brush hard chrome finish which looks just like stainless. By the way, the hard chrome is a better finish than stainless. It is a keeper for sure.

Here's a picture of the trigger. Sorry for the quality but all I have is a camera phone.

Hit the jackpot. Found the original box, manual, warranty card, screw driver, and cleaning rod. Also found the box for the Pachmayr grips. No luck finding the original grips. The warranty card shows a purchase date of October 1978. The box says the "fin" is "BH". Also says "INS" is "22" and "PKR" is "4". Not sure what those references mean.

Your gun has the "Target" hammer and trigger which are wider than what normally comes on the gun. They were an extra cost option at the time of purchase or they could be purchased from S&W and added later. The side of the box may indicate if they were special ordered with the gun.

Really nice gun! I'm partial to 28-2s. They handle well for me. Since it's chromed/nickeled, it's no longer original so the value is as a using gun or a "shooter". The new finish is way more durable than the blue original. The value is in your rememberance of it's association to your Dad. So-o-o, take it out, shoot it and enjoy a part of your personal history.

Back in the '70s it wasn't uncommon to plate these guns and adding "Target" parts was also very common. I plated a number of Model 28-2 with Electroless Nickel and would often plate individual Hammers and Triggers of all configurations. The Nickel process is very easy to do and much less costly than Hard Chrome. Without having this 'in-hand' it's hard to tell one way or another.

If it were my father's gun I'd keep it forever... but I'd also shoot the living daylights out of it and carry it as well.

Very nice, especially if it's the brushed hard chrome. Should last forever.
