Today I cataloged all of the markings on my Model 28-2, serial N255xxx, 4” barrel, in standard finish. As I've written before, this revolver shows no signs of use or wear.
Here’s what I found:
On the grip frame under the stock panels
Left side
F1
F8
F13 (round top three)
3 (flat top)
X3529 (round top three)
Right side
N inside of a rectangle, or possibly a square
Z inside of a circle (definitely not an N lying on its side)
On the underside of the star extractor
V, or possibly N 255xxx
On the front frame strap
N255xxx
MOD.28-2
On the yoke
X3529 (round top three)
F13 (round top three)
Now here’s where I’m confused:
After searching this forum, and scouring the 3rd Edition of the SCSW, I’ve still not found a definitive answer on what the N rectangle/square and Z circle markings on the right side of the grip frame under the stock panels indicate. Both sources (Forum and SCSW) identify the N rectangle/square marking as having something to do with factory nickle finish work. This revolver has the standard Highway Patrolman finish.
What have I missed?

Except for the serial number and model number the other numbers are meaningless and represent assemblers, fitters and inspectors stampings.

Dick is correct...All the Ns Zs, etc. are fitters and inspectors marks and have nothing to do with the finish of the revolver.

Sounds good to me (thanks diamondback68 and Doc44). I think my current diet of TheraFlu and post-nasal drip has clouded my judgement.
