I was chatting with a friend the other day and told him I would buy his dad's S&W .44 Mag. I was under the impression it was a 629 and offered him $400. I wanted an older one without the ugly lock. His dad is in his 70's so I knew the gun was not shot much. His dad agreed saying he did not need it. Imagine my surprise when he showed up with a like new 6" 29-2 that was made some time in 1980. He got the $400 and I gladly took the 29-2.
Bluing is outstanding and no noticable turn marks on the cylinder. Gun had Hogue monogrips on it. He included 3 HKS speedloaders and a leather holster. He did not have the factory box or grips.
I am very reluctant to shoot it based on its fantastic condition. What were the factory grips? The football type? What type of box or presentation case did it come in?

Welcome to the Forum - I love your Forum name (and I'm NOT a deer hunter )
Your 29-2 should have come with football relief target stocks and a wooden presention box.
Oh, and WE like pictures!

Since the gun has already been fired, you could shoot it a few hundred times & not effect value.
While it is desirable, it is not particularly rare, so you should take it to the range & enjoy it. If it still bothers you, I'm sure someone in the forum classifieds would like to trade you a 629 for it. Maybe not a p&r stainless gun for it, but certainly a pre-lock gun.

Racklover, the proper grips will vary based on manufacturing date - either diamond centered ones for the 60s, or checkered/no diamond center starting in the late 60s until 82. Washer style would vary, also (but you can't see those when mounted).

Hey Racklover
Is your 29-2 a 6" or 6 1/2"? I have restored Presentation Cases(restored liners) for the 80s period N frames!
This pic is of a case for a 4" gun but I have 6" cases also!

Have not shot it yet. I am torn about that and want a nice piece to pass on to the kids... I have a GP100 and .45 Colt Blackhawk for hunting/plinking.

Very nice gun, but I vote to shoot it since it has already been shot.

It's been shot already, go shoot it and enjoy it! That's what God made it to do, have fun, it's already whispering to you in your ear! Beautiful gun by the way, and it's good to hear that all parties are happy with the deal! I will throw this out; besides full load magnums, pick up some .44 Special and try those too, the lesser-recoil might be more fun.

I have two boxes for your gun and some tools. Problem is I don't know what they are worth??
All I would want is a fair price for both parties plus shipping. Any helpwould be appriciated.

Don't think for a minute the kids won't be shooting it if/when it becomes theirs! Shoot it or sell it, either way you'll get more out of it, than just letting it sit.
