LOBO: Does your factory DAO Model 64 shoot as good as the two I have? I paid $269 each for them, both surplus guns. Probably armored car or some such and man do they shoot good.

You bet it does!! I was wondering if the trigger pull would be excessively heavy being a DAO, but it's the complete oppositie. It's an accurate fella to boot!

I've got my original issue M28 4" from back in 1985 when I joined the Montana Hwy Patrol. Also have the M5903 that replaced the 28's and two SIG229's that replaced the 5903. BEST one of ALL of them was the last SIG229. It was my RETIREMENT gift!!
Also have a fairly rare MT Fish Wildlife and Parks 4" M-66, with the MFWP logo on the sideplate. These were sold at auction IF the Warden didn't buy his own gun. Found mine at a local MT shop for all of $215!! It had an atrocious set of aftermarket target grips that HID the logo!! Talk about LUCK.
Also have a circa 1944 Colt Official Police that was issued to an AAC Aviator, who then carried it through his entire 25+ year career. This psitol was GIVEN to me as the Family was afraid having it in their home!!!

They were equally surprised about how things ended up in the long run, and said they would have never put any money on a bet if someone had told them things would turn out as they did.
Life is indeed both ironic and strange sometimes.

I have two former police guns.
The first is a Reg. Mag. that went to the Butte, MT police dept in 1937. This is the one I found in the pawn shop.
The second is a 66 no dash That I bought from the nephew of a retired IA highway patrolman. The Highway patrolman bought this from someone else.
I think it is either a Washington Highway Patrol gun or Wyoming Highway Patrol gun. If anyone know which and any history I sure would appriciate it.

Well, just pretend the mod 28 is a model 66 no dash , but you can see the WHPX on the side of the 66.
Thanks, JOhn

Wow! Nice thread! I collect retired PD revolvers w/ 120 + agencies to date including 49 states. I've been off of the forum for a while and was very pleasantly surprised to return to find this here!!
I still need a New Mexico gun if anyone has one for sale/trade!!

Just picked up a 686 no dash marked on the left side of the frame with WHP089724. Does anyone know if Wyoming might have used these guns as well?

If I recall correctly, Wyoming HP went from the M66 to a Beretta 92 in the late 80s. If they reverted to another .357, it would have to be after that. That number is also pretty high for WHP, which currently has 207 sworn patrolmen, a number I think is an all-time high.
Agencies like WHP posed a problem in the handgun area when the Wondernine craze hit. They covered huge stretches of deserted highway in solo cars. Having a whole box of ammo on the belt was attractive, but 9mm ammo was still far from its current advanced state of development and wasn't known for stopping power, either on personnel or vehicles, while the .357 has a long-standing reputation in both categories.

My first gun was a Model 10 4inch 38 special that has a Bull Barrel and was the sidearm of a Westchester County NY Deputy Sheriff for close to 30 years on the job.The Bull barrel was acquired by the County Police armorer and truly gives it character...It is one sweet shooting revolver....God Bless....Mike

I don't think that is a Wyoming Highway Patrol gun.
As I recall they had the number on the other side of the frame in smaller font.
They were no dashes and came with Target grips.
They only had the 66's for a short time.
They got them about 1978. They issued, and practiced with 125 grain mags. I heard they shot the guns loose in a short period of time.
They then went to Berettas and after that I heard they had bid on a bunch of Sigs, but that was many years ago.

Pre-32 Terrier shipped to NYPD in 11/1950 and then purchased by NYPD cop when they had to pay for their own handguns. Not sure they still do this??

A '75 mdl. 67 with CHP (California Highway Patrol) markings. Turning out to be one of my most favorite guns: adj. sights, .38 Spl., light weight, stainless. What's not to like?

Hey Cruiser,
these days they take um and cut them up, i have reason to believe i was the last fellow in the county trained on a revolver. last i saw my M-64 it was thrown in a milk crate with a bunch of others in the trunk of a patrol car. my 6946 just went away in similar fashion and, you better sit down 'cause i know you're not gonna like this, we just got M&P .40's i am happy with the new weapon (so far) and even more happy with the retention offered by the new leather? Kydex? plydex?
anyhow hang onto that one (or sell it to me) 'cause from what i've seen there are precious few that could've escaped the bandsaw.
regards,
Rich

I lived in Tucson for a few years back in the mid 90's. A gunshop called Jensens was a hotbed for police trade-ins from California agencies. A few of my scores were a 66 marked like the previous posters 67 (CHP), and 2 Mod 15's marked SACO D.A. (Sacramento District Attorney)
I also scored a 3" HB Mod 10 that was used by the University of Arizona police force and I still have one of the Arizona DPS Sig 220 trade-ins. By the way, the Mod 15's were $150 apiece back in 1995!

Here's a pic of my police marked .38 Special, 4" M&P revolver shipped to Melrose, Massachusetts Police Department in December, 1930:
When I got it, it had a set of 1960's vintage PC Magnas, now it sports a correct set of grips courtesy of forum member "1911" (Thanks, Gary). I always like to find a unit patch to go along with my police marked revolvers.
This revolver is in good shape, probably 85% finish, with some odd brown staining (blood?) on one side of the barrel, like a cop used it to bash a felon over the head with it.
It is marked "M.P.D.7" on the rear grip frame. The Smith and Wesson letter revealed it was shipped with two other revolvers, marked M.P.D. 6,7 and 8. Cost was $20.37 each. It shoots great, sights are regulated dead on, deadly accurate.

I guess these qualify as former or current Police guns since I have carried them over the past 15 years and still carry some pictured.
I currently carry the 625 pictured on the right as my back up gun.
The model 19 I had to retire due to a cracked forcing cone.
Then there is my carry combo I carried for a while my no dash 686 and model 60-3

All of the LE trade-ins I've come across seem to be in pretty good shape. One of the shops that I do alot of business with tries very hard to get them and sells them all. They are bargin for someone looking for a good handgun, but not wanting to pay top $$$.
I started collecting S&W revolvers with LE trade-ins. So far a 10-6, 15-2, and a 19-4. All are worn, but all lock up well (the 15-2 is a little loose) and shoot very well (even the 15-2). The 10-6 is the best shooting DA revolver I own.
I also have a mdl 60 (no dash) that might have been a LE trade-in, but it doesn't have any department markings.

Yep. Trying to fit too small a shoe on too big a foot. On the lookout now for the right grips, hopefully someone has a decent set at a decent price, Shoo

This 4" Smith and Wesson M&P was one of those that R.M. Vivas got from Yonkers Raceway a few years ago, and sold to Forum members at exciting prices. All ex-NYPD guns. MR. Vivas supplied a copy of the NYPD property ledger that showed ths revolver was issued (or sold) to Officer Alexander Sterling on February 25, 1959.
How these revolvers wound up at a "Down at the Heels" race track would make an interesting story.
Anyway, this one shoots great, I shoot it occasionally, clean it then put it back in the safe. It's "Out to Pasture", so to speak...

Two Colts... Issued by the NYPD to my father in 1965 and carried until he retired in 1981.
The OP was the standard duty sidearm.
The Detective Special was the off duty/plain cloths gun. This particular one when back to Colt with a slightly bent frame after an altercation in the line of duty. The frame was straightened and the action was reworked by Colt.
