Picked up this pistol with holster for a house pistol.Finnish was well worn but action was like new.For $150 out the door,I bought it.While lettering another Smith,I inquired about this one.Was issued 2/13/50. Having three uncles who served as policeman in the "Murder Capital of the USA",Gary,Indiana(My home town)I thought this might be a revolver to keep. Are there any other Police revolvers out there? Like military pistols, with a real history,I think these are cool.

I love Police trade-in revolvers!!! Most have been taken care of by Police Armorers, who know what they are doing.
The only use these revolvers ever got is shooting a yearly qualification.....maybe 100 rounds/ year. On the inside, they are just broken in abit.
I have two, that I consider to be my self defense weapons. I use my 2" M-36 Chief's Special for my CCW gun, and my 4" M-10-7 for my local "wood's gun", and bedside companion. They have smooth actions, and are super simple and dependable. Just what you want for
self-defense!!! Bob

There are still some police turn-in revolvers out there. A lot of the three and four-inch M64s and M65s on the market now are ex-cop guns.
I have an M28 that was formerly a Pueblo, CO, duty gun. I haven't seen any of those for sale in a while.

NH State Police guns:
Model 66-1, with a lanyard ring, very unusual on a Model 66 I think.
My 1 and only RM, 1 of 45 delivered to the NH State Police in Sept. of 1937. The NH State Police was formed by the State in June of 1937, and was the first LE agency fully equipped with RMs. There were less than 45 troopers when they rolled on their first day of patrol, and apparently at least a few of the guns were stored for later issue.
In addition I have a 686 4" marked NHSP, which belonged to the same trooper who owned the 66-1. I am currently negotiating on a Model 10-5 4" issued to the NH State Police. I am told by a reliable source that there are also Outdoorsmans that were issued, along with later pre 27s and maybe 28s, but I've never seen reference to any of these 3 guns anywhere. In addition back in the 1970s the then Governors security detail apparently had issued to them short barreled Model 29s with a NH State Police mini badge insignia in place of the grip medallions. How cool would that be to find?
As always, the hunt is on....

All 3 are pretty cool, the loop is neat. I have a few former ploice guns, and there is always a lot of history to them.

Great gun and price. I have bought 4 ex-police guns over the last few years and they all have been excellent guns. Finish wear doesn't bother me. I am a shooter and not a collector.

Some very nice police trade-in guns and pics. I have two Rugers that were police guns--a Service Six and Speed Six. Both were hardly used and almost new. Great range guns. Paid $300 for one and $335 for the other.

I picked up a 15-3 that appears to be new in the box but missing the grips and is stamped "Property of Sacremento Sheriff"
I got it cheap and figured I'd look into it when I got a chance. Anybody got grips for it?

This is my 28-2 I was told it was a Denver PD gun...I have no proof, but its fun to think about. This gun has some holster wear, but is very tight. Shot a little high when I got it...I adjusted it and it is very consistant
I had a Buffalo PD Model 10, it had lots of wear to the finish and grips, but was as tight as if it was new.

Here my Concord NH 38/44 HD. I found it on Gunbroker and it was advertised as an M28. Yikes! I called the pawn shop up and asked him how much and did he take a credit card over the phone. He said $250.00 and yes he did!
When I lettered it it came back to Concord PD about the same date as yours. I don't have the
serial number and exact date to post because I'm not on my computer that has the data on it. Sorry.
Serial # 49258 shipped to the Concord. NH Police Department Dec 30, 1936

I bought a M65 3 inch police trade in about 18 months ago for the purpose of carrying it concealed. I have carried it since then. Today I began to carry it as my duty weapon. This police revolver from the mid 90s is back on duty after a short hiatus....

My former sergeant bought this M66 new for about $165 in 1978. When he became a detective and switched to a 2" snub I traded him my 6" nickle Colt Python even up for the M66. We both knew that I had $150 invested in the Python. I still have this $150 M66.

My SFPD Model 58 and a 19. The 19 was given to me by a friend who carried it, along with a 4" 29 in the late '60s and early '70s as a police officer in New Hampshire.
These two belong to my buddy:
Florida Highway Patrol Model 66, and the Model 60 he carried as a Sheriff's Deputy in FL and as a backup while with the FBI.

Not sure where it came from but all J&G Sales said was it was a "police trade in" with a batch of them. So all I know is that it's a 10-8 with some hard use in the past 20 or so years but mechanically it's perfect and locks up tight.

D,
What is the story on that holster design? Is it a pocket holster, or IWB that buttons to the suspender button on the belt?
I have never seen one of those.

Many thanks, James. One day, those two will be classics like some of the fine old iron pictured in this thread.
I just hope my grandsons recognize that...

I have a few police trade in guns, but there is one that has some special meaning to me...in a wierd way.
In 1986 I was arrested by a Kitsap County Sheriff deputy, it changed my life in a good way.
Fast forward to 2008.....my buddy(local LE/Mil dealer) took in some 686's as a PD trade ins(been sitting at the Sheriff's for many years) there were 10 or so 686 all with tags with the deputies names on them, the deputies had the chance to buy(for $180) them if they wanted, they had 2 weeks to get them if they wanted.
As I looked them over....I found the one with the name of the deputy that arrested me.......I waited 2 weeks....watched all but one of them go home to the deputies......then when 3 week passed........there was one left and it was the one carried by the deputy that arrested me....and I took it home
kinda wierd I know...but it means alot to me.

The first is an M66-2 that was carried by a friend of mine when he first started on the PD we both currently work at. He bought it personally and carried it until he bought a S&W M659 9mm auto, which he also still has. After that, he shot it a LOT in the PD competitions our County Prosecutor's Office used to hold. It's REAL SMOOTH with a little holster wear. Most of the ammo shot out of it was real light .38 wadcutters so there's no flame cutting and the forcing cone and timing are very good. I traded him a Glock 23 that I HATED and that I had $310.00 in.
Here's the other, my M649 (I can't remember the dash number and it's in the safe, it's .357 and MIM parts but no lock).
I carried this revolver with Uncle Mike's Boot Grips from shortly after they came out until last year, when it was replaced with a 2 1/4" SP101. It still shoots very well and is kept for substitute standard in case anything happens to the SP. The SP is just easier for me to shoot well. It was the last gun I bought from my parent's hardware store before they got rid of their FFL, I'm thinking I paid about $350.00 for it (dealer cost at the time, anyway) but may be wrong about that.
We have a guy about to retire that carries an M66-2 and has carried it for 30+ years. I've shot it a few times, talk about SMOOOOOOTH! I'm going to talk to him and, if his children don't want it, I'm going to see if he will sell it to me. We also have a female Officer who bought 4 M66's when she was hired, she and her husband were very into guns then and each wanted one and a spare. I'm going to see if she will sell me one, two were allegedly shot a little, the other two are allegedly NIB. We'll see how that works out.

Landpimp... Interesting story and a great looking 686 to boot. Sounds like it was a "meant to be" for you to end up with that gun.
I had a similar experience in my youth with a life changing "run in" with the law, except that instead of ending up with an arresting officer's trade in gun, I ended up with a badge serving with some of the same guys that I had encounters with as a minor.
They were equally surprised about how things ended up in the long run, and said they would have never put any money on a bet if someone had told them things would turn out as they did.
Life is indeed both ironic and strange sometimes.

Five inch non registered shipped to the Mississippi Highway Patrol in December 1940. It has been back to the factory 3 times and has seen a lot of miles and is not so pretty but I love old duty guns.
