Back in the day I believe the duty gun was issued and you bought the OD and you had a choice of Smith or Colt. Before the merger in the mid 90's Transit and Housing were separate Dept's from NYPD and operated very differently. Was good friends with a Transit Detective who usually could be found above ground "protecting" a liquid refreshment establishment.
