I recently took possession of a 37 with bobbed hammer and no lock. I've never carried a revolver because I'm too slow with the reloads, but I do well with my new (to me) 25-2 in .45 ACP, which isn't exactly a carry piece. Through a Google search, I found TK Custom, and I'm leaning toward having them machine the cylinder for use with moon clips. Good idea, bad idea? Any thoughts?

I can't speak to his machining but he sure as hell stands behind his moonclips.
Bought two packs of ten and had issues with two pieces - called him and was sent another 10 pack with no questions asked.

I wouldn't do it.

.38 cal moonclips aren't nearly as nice as the .45ACP ones. Since you can get nice J frame speed loaders from Safariland or HKS I'd just use those.

With speedloaders you can use any .38 spl ammo; with moonclips some brass fits and some don't.

I have an 8 shot 627 and I can tell you the moonclips are half the thickness and much more flimsy than good ol .45acp clips. And with the .38 clips you'll likely need a tool to snap the rounds in, I sure do.

I was seriously thinking about having a 7 shot L frame and 3 inch 65 cut until I got my 627 and changed my mind. So as long as there are good speedloaders available for your gun I'd say don't do it.

Spend the saved dough on ammo and speedloaders.

Hey Palouse - sorry, I miss read, yes they do sell them for the 37 and having it cut is a good way to go, Have fun.

moonclips are great but on a J frame I dont think "I" would for one reason, you have to carry loaded moonclips and they just dont fit well in my pockets(where I carry a speedstrip in the left and J frame in the right)

Thanks for the follow-up, guys. I appreciate the additional info. Maybe I just need to practice with speed loaders.

I would definitely try speed loaders first. They are cheaper, for one, and you don't have to send your gun away and have it changed forever to use moon clips. I don't know if a small cylinder can be machined so that you can use individual rounds like the N frames, so you don't have to worry about that either.

Moonclips and TK Custom go hand in hand. Had my 642 machined for moonclips. Faster reloads, no shells to not fully eject. If this happens just grab and pull out. Reload keep shooting. The ejector does not fully push out spent shells, not long enough.
Tom's Machining is excellent very professional.

Quite right that J frame moonclips are not as robust. But still work and very fast. I can draw, fire 15 round in 14 sec in a A-Zone on target at 8 yards. Not fast but fast for me.

Hope this helps

One last thing. Can use moonclips, speedloader or load one at a time after machining.
