I am looking for a .22 revolver. My local gun store says he has the following in stock

model 34
model 41
model 61

Are any of these revolvers? If not, what does S&W make for .22 revolvers? Thanks for the help. Cheryl

The 34 is a revolver; the 41 is a Target semi-auto, and the 61 is a small concealment semi-auto.

S&W also made the Models 17, 18, 317, 63 and stainless 617, among others in .22 LR.
The 317, 617 and 63 are still in current production, but all models can be fairly easily found used.

The Model 34 came in two versions - square butt and round butt. If I remember correctly, the round butt was a 4" and the square butt was a 2-1/2" barrel. It always seemed to me that the round butt should have had the shorter barrel.
Which one does your dealer have?

The 34 is a fine revolver.

We were typing at the same time; see my above post. Which version of 34 is it?

I am not sure what kind he has. It was a very short phone call. I will find out tomorrow when I go up there. The only decent gun store around me(MA) is 50 miles away. I will post when I find out.

I must partly correct my previous post; I looked up the M34 in the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson and it appears that either barrel length could have been had with a square or round butt.

I purchased 1972 34-1 4"sb last week in case my Granddaughters wanted to learn to shoot. I was quite impressed with it. Paid $350. Good Luck & maybe it will be a Smith & Wesson Christmas. Notime2

I love my 1974 M34. I love it so much I want to find another to shoot and let this baby stay in the safe. But I will probably get a 17 first as I don't have one and would like to find a 6" M17. Here is my 34 below my 36.

Thanks for the pics. What kind of ammo do you use? How accurate is the 34?

It is very accurate and I use the cheap Remington ammo from Wal Mart. I will be on the hunt for a 17 next year.

The 4" model 34 is one of the two .22lr revolvers I shoot every weekend. It's a little gem, the quality of this revolver is exceptional. It is light weight and easy to hold, has a light trigger pull in single-stage, and is incredibly accurate for a revolver. The 34 will shoot a tighter group than my newer stainless steel 4" model 63, and that one is a keeper. If the 34 you are looking at is in reasonably good condition, go for it. There really are no equals to the small J-frame Smiths.

I saw a Model 34 in good condition (little muzzle wear, timing and bore excellent) a gun shop down south for $250. Did I make a big mistake in not buying it?

Nope, you didn't make a mistake. Just tell me where it's at and I'll take it! Just kidding! That is a good price. I've been looking for a 34 for years and have never found one for sale around here.

Hi, Thanks for all the replies to this post. Well, I went to my local gun shop and put a S&W model 34 on layaway. It is the square butt with a 2"(I think) bbl. There was a 4"bbl available, but not as nice as the snubbie. It was expensive, at least for me($600)but it's LNIB with papers and has only had a few hundred rounds through it. The trigger is sweet. Can't wait to bring it home!

Did you say you paid $600??? Wow. If so, you're every gun shop owner's dream..... I see them LNIB for about $350 to $375.

Wow, the 'Bama must be a great place to live. I haven't seen one for sale in 2" up here for less than $525, and most are $550 and up for years.

I'm thinkin I need a vacation down south soon.

Out here in Utah the older 34's run 500 to 600 especially with the box and papers. You paid a fair price by today's standards.

I live in Massachusetts. Around here, I was lucky to find one! My nearest gun shop is 50 miles away-100 miles round trip! And yes, I know it was expensive, but that's how things are priced here!

Fear not, here in C.A. (Central Alabama), the whole range of S&W .22s; 17, 34, 63, 317, 617, etc, all run $400-$500+ used around here - and usually without any goodies (box, etc). Of course, new prices range from $569-$619 for the new 317/63/617 range at 'good' stores - to list price at 'yuppee' stores. For MA and a 'collectible' grade, you did okay.

I am not as particular as most re the IL, or SS, so I finally bought a new 4" 617 in September ($609 + s/t). Below it is sporting some Ahrends square conversion finger groove grips and shown with the spare-no-expense el-cheapo Wally World ammo - which it loves.

Mine now sports the Ahrends 'Retro Target' style grips, which I like better. My 6" 66 looked kinda naked without it's grips, anyway.

I've always loved the model 61. Lost track of how many of them I've owned over the years. BUT I've never seen even one that worked!

Stainz, nice looking gun. Where did you get those grips? Do you know if they make after-market grips for the 34? Thanks

Hey Cheryl,
I think I found a nice set of aftermarket grips for a J-SB. Made by Eagle. Let me look into it and see what he wants.

Cheryl

I bought this model 34-1 S&W in May of '06 for $389 + S/T here in Southern MN at my local gun shop.

It had no box nor papers, but was in like brand new condition, hardly ever shot.

I have shot it many times now at the range and it is very accurate. I use it for inexpensive ammo practice for my carry revolvers: (a S&W 642 .38 special +P; S&W 638 .38 special +P; and Ruger SP101 .357 magnum) all with about 2" barrels.

I'm sure you'll get a lot of fun use out of yours too!

RonJon

P.S. If you notice in the pictures - I put some shrink tubing over the trigger to ease the wear & tear on my trigger finger because it has some wickedly sharp grooves on the trigger!

Hi RonJon, That looks exactly like the gun I bought. As you said, i got the snubby as a cheap means to practice for my carry which is also a 642 or 442 .38SP. It seems like a fine gun. Haven't shot it yet. Will see about the trigger area. Thanks for the warning and the input.

Prices are relative. I have seen guys here with M13's that they picked up for less than $400. Considering you can not even find one in my area, the seller can ask what ever he wants for it.

cheryld, if you pick up the gun, buy at least 5 different ammo-versions. .22's are very picky. If you find a good choice, buy as much as you think it makes sense. I got very good results with the Eley Universal in my 34-1 and the same gun is nearly useless with CCI Stinger, Remington Viper or RWS Pistol-Match.
