Now that's a neat piece. With that configuration you would expect a shorter barrel.

H Richard
I thought the same thing about the barrel length. S/N show 1910 circa. Yet on the barrel it has a 1928 pat also. Guess barrel was changed at some time. That why I need a Colt letter
Thanks

This 32-20 belonged to a friend's grandfather. He was a deputy in the Knoxville, TN area in the 1930's. I know this revolver has been cut. Help me out, I think it is a 1905 4th change, but I may be totally wrong. Seems someone put post war magnas on it too.

Great thread, thanks for reviving it.
I can play! Everyone has probably already seen this, but here:
This is a 1917 which was modified prior to my ownership. It was very damaged with rust, so I had it engraved and plated.
Chopped barrel, sleeved and set back .2", cylinder cutback .2", trigger guard trimmed and lined, round butted, radiused trigger, bobbed and lined hammer (note it is trimmed to match the frame), checkered top strap, and a trigger stop added. They did a ton of custom work, and other then the rust pits, it was a work of art. It has an amazing trigger as well.

Joe , and all. Really enjoyed reading these old posts about old guns.
My desire for a 4" 44 magnum with a full underlug led me to cut a 61/2" down and have a Millett sight dovetailed into the barrel.
The actual length is 37/8" . The rear sight has now been modified with a channel extending forwarg from the rear blade, to make it shoot to point of aim.
And of course , all modern guns , 3 in. or thereabouts, came about because of the desire for a çombat' revolver.
A 3" model 29 ,with Alessi holster and óld school' Tyler Tru fit grips, the ultimate concealment magnum?
Regards ,Allen Frame

Here is my bobbed M13. It has a radiused and polished trigger, the bottom of the cylinder latch has been removed, and the front sight painted blue.

Well, I thought my custom combats were on here but I guess not...So here they are:
1st my custom 625 of 1989, with trigger job, custom hammer and custom night sights installed.
Next is my custom 2" model 15 that has a trigger job and custom night sights.

Well, it's not really "custom", but my mod 60 with bobbed hammer, finger groove boot grips, and the trigger serrations ground out and polished enhances it's usability.

Late to the party but I hadn't seen this thread before so I just ran through it to enjoy what others have found or built. I bought this 1918 vintage Model 1917 off GunsAmerica so I have no idea of the background. The Pointer stocks and Pachmyar adapter I added after taking off a large set of rubber grips.
This one I bought from another member here. It was a 25-2 rebarreled with a 1950 (tapered) 6.5" barrel. I sent it to my gunsmith with instructions to make it into a "Mountain Gun". It turned out great and is possibly the best holster gun I've owned.

As a modified old police gun, this is a good example. Shipped as a longer barreled blued gun, Registered magnum #40 was carried by an LAPD officer. When he went to a plainclothes assignment (likely in the 40's), the gun was taken to a local gunsmith to have a short factory 3.5" barrel (numbered to the gun) installed and round butted, and nickeled. That local Gunsmith was Frank Pachmayer. It was carried for a total of 35 years at LAPD.

Gigantic Pachmayer presentations. I have some hand checkered 1917 grips on it now just to have something on it. I will likely have Ken Driskell do a set of custom stags for it.
Based on the modified grip frame it probably had a modified service grip and a Pachmayer/Mershon grip adaptor.

This thread is a bit old ... but a god subject!
I cut the hammer and added Farrant stocks, a light custom...

With some "Old Style" HP's. I think I have a box of those somewhere in my pile of 38's.

One of the finest fighting revolvers ever made...
was the Colt New Service in 38-40. Its reputation as a man killer as better even than the 45 Colt and professional gunmen loved it due to its tapered cartridge case. Just tap the ejector rod and the cases would fall free of the cylinder, significantly speeding up the reload. The one shown in the foreground was made in 1919. It was a "targeted" model in that the buyer asked Colt to carefully regulate the sights with full power loads. The frame was stamped with a "T" near the serial number. This gun was VERY accurate and shot to POA at 25 yards with full power loads. The gun in back is a Bowen custom Model 58, which was in my opinion a modern version of the NS.
These photos also give you an appreciation for how large the NS is in comparison to a modern fighting revolver.

My Fathers duty gun from 1938/39 was a 6" Colt New Service in .357 magnum with King Sights and action job........... it also served as his centerfire target pistol in the 50s and 60s in the Pittsburgh Police Pistol League.........
I will attest it is one big gun!!!!

I picked up this gun at a swap meet.
I really liked the "custom" snub nose, as poorly as it was done,
But the barrel was pretty shot out and was replaced.

70s vintage 58. It was on Auction Arms in January 2006...several hundred under the going price of an unmodified one. Think I was the only bidder.
Called the shop after the gun was delivered and was told that they had done the work for a customer in 2001...gun was like new. Action job, smooth and polished trigger, bobbed and serrated hammer, oversize cylinder release and Mag-Na-Port Quadporting... About $400 worth of "customizing" that decreased the value of the gun about $350.00.. And the guy brought it back to the shop at Christmas 2005 and sold it to them for Christmas money...and he had never fired it... But someone did what I always wanted to do to a 58 and could not bring myself to...
A few years later I found a complete mint parts set so now have a barrel, trigger, hammer and cylinder release to put the gun back to original...

Great thread, don't know how I've missed it all these years, especially with it being brought back to life over and over.
I've had a few that would be at home here, though most have gone on to new homes. All but this one (you've probably seen it here before), it's staying with me 'til the end. My Krebs Custom 'CROWBAR' is an M28 Highway Patrolman customized by Marc Krebs back around 1987 for an IL cop. It's been converted to .45ACP with an M25 cyl and shortened and ported M25 barrel. The adjustable rear sight has been removed and the top strap modified into a fixed rear sight to match the custom front sight and serrated to match the barrel and stop glare. The hammer was bobbed but cross hatched and the frame relieved to allow it to be cocked for single action shooting. In addition the right side of the trigger guard has been cut away for fast access and the grip frame has been round butted. The custom ebony combat style grips have round ivory inserts with little crowbars scrimshawed on them. This is a pretty cool piece, it always makes me think that if autos never became popular, this is the revolver a modern gun fighter might carry.
[IMG] [/IMG]
The Crowbar posing with a Krebs built ORM Colt 1991A1 Commander, this gun was built in the mid to late '90s when Marc was at the top of the custom 1911 game. They compliment each other well.

Bet with that big PowerPort the recoil of the .45 revolver is zero.... I know when shooting the custom 58 with the Mag-Na-Port QuadPorts the muzzle rise is noticeably less than the standard non-ported 58 I have...

I find the customized-for-carry working mans revolvers from that era to be fascinating. My granddad was a cop from mid 30s to the end of WWII, and my dad began his LE career in the early 60s. My granddad's mentioned that his S&W .44 Special had received a trigger job. Sadly, he sold it at some point, carrying a department issue instead until he left LE. My dad's wheel guns were usually modified with Tyler-grips until Pachmyers came on the market, action jobs, and paint or nail polish von the front sight ramps. I think that was pretty much the norm for those who wanted something more than a stock revolver during the 60s-70s. I think a collection of old LE revolvers in modified form is awesome.

I thought this thread was very interesting, and this is my first post to the forum. This is a beat up Model 10 I found in pawn shop. Cut it down to round butt and stippled rear strap, bobbed the hammer, thinned trigger guard and polished trigger, a little melt down and an XS front sight with custom stocks and parkerized finish. A few other odds and ends. Hopefully the pics will come out; I'm not real computer savvy.

Posted on another thread: this 1941 Colt Official Police has had the barrel professionally shortened to 2 inches, and recessed crowned, the front sight relocated, and the action is tuned to be the sweetest shooting of any of my Colt revolvers. In its Clark holster, it came from Southern California, supposedly from an investigator in the Los Angeles area in the 1950s. It shoots incredibly well.
Since I first posted this, I've found a vintage Tyler t Grip that fits it. I like it even better now, with this "new" addition. When I first received the Colt, it had a broken vintage grip adaptor, but it was in really bad condition. This one is one of the older ones, and I can't believe how hard they are to track down:
Best Regards, Les

Iggy, that is one versatile 45 you have there!!! It not only looks cool, but is a manageable size, and fires a range of ammo, and should handle just about any chore you might run into up there in God's country. (Well, that's what we call West Virginia, but I've been to Wyoming, and you've sure got some beautiful country there also). Is that a three inch barrel?

Old LAPD Duty Gun
A couple years b ack I was introduced to a classy gentleman who was in his mid-90's. He had been an officer with the LAPD in the early-mid 50's and wanted to sell a couple handguns.
One was obviously professionally modified to accommodate a beautiful pair of walnut bottom-tapered target grips. The bottom of the front side grip frame was cut, then re-welded to allow the grips to taper down.
From the way it looked, I'd almost swear that it was factory work. the cut, fit, and re-finish was perfect. I was unaware of the modification when I got the gun, so I didn't get to ask the origin of the work.
However, the action was smooth as glass and light as a feather. The gun was a blued 1949 Target Masterpiece and was otherwise as issued. The gentleman was only an officer for a few years, then persued a successful business career.
Knowing that I was also a retired officer, he asked if I participated in"money shoots." He explained that back then, if you shot a weekly qualification course, you were give an extra $2 per week. I suspect he did well at them.
He also showed me a couple of old photos of him as a young patrolman. In them, he was in uniform on the set of the movie, "Pete Kelly's Blues." He is shown with Jack Webb, Peggy Lee, and a couple others. He was there selling tickets to a policeman's ball.
His then, now my, modified S&W Target Masterpiece with unique custom grips was prominently visible. He said that I could copy them, but he passed away before I could do that. I'd kill for the chance again. I also bought a pristine 2" SB blued M&P complete with tan duty "Lewis" belt holster. He used it when he was assigned to be a "police photographer."
He was a true gentleman. I wish I'd have had more time to talk of his experiences. None the less, i feel fortunate for the time I had. I'll try to photograph the above mentioned revolvers and post them if I can.

Thanks for the story, EGAD, hope that we can see photos. Most of us here love these old firearms, and yours sound great.

I have enjoyed this thread in the past, let's see if we can have some more combat custom guns added.
