a friend has a M-32 (38/32 terrier) with a R139xx serial number. when I look at the standard catalog 3 rd edition serial numbers with an "R" show for a M-60 & M-651. it has been a long time since I seen the gun but he says it is a 32-1. I'm trying to find out what the cylinder length is and how many screws in the sideplate. I assume if it has a 4 screw sideplate and short cylinder it would be on the improved "I" frame.

any ideas?

That's an error in the book. The 32-1 revision was the transition to the J frame and the R prefix started in 1969 (GCA 68) for this model. The cylinder is 1.4" according to SCSW #3.
