I have a new 396 Night Guard which is a great fighting revolver. I have a lot of reloads, 240 gr. bullet ahead of 7 or 6.5 gr. of Unique. It is not much fun to practice with. Even the 200 gr. Blazers which I carry with are a pleasure in comparison.

Can someone recommend a more comfortable round to practice with? My carpal tunnel will appreciate it.

Look in the cowboy action loads section of the Hodgdon reloading manual

Here's a couple of for instances: a 200 grain lead bullet with 3.5 grains of Hodgdon Clays or 4.3 grains of IMR Trail Boss will give you 750 fps for probably what is the softest shooting load in 44 Special.

FYI: I can't recommend Blazer ammo for self defense. The factory doesn't either. CCI/Speer does make that load in brass cases so you might want to look for some of that. Or consider CorBon DPX.

Factory Cowboy Action Shooting loads are a pleasure to shoot, no matter what the manufacturer.

I reload Meister 200 grain lead RNFP's in .44 Special with 4.0 grains of Bullseye. With CCI large pistol primers, these are very easy shooting with almost no recoil. Very accurate too at 50 feet.

I've been reloading for 40 years, and there is an old adage about loads:
Use 4 grains of bullseye for everything......

Honest....it works 95% of the time...remember,none of the big guns even existed back then (.454 C,.460S&W, 500S&W)
this is the classic load for 185gr and 200gr lead in the .45ACP;
this works fine in a .357Mag, and as a hot load in .38spl.;
it is fabulous in the .44 spl with a 215gr PbSWC.
Remember--these are for practice only...accuracy is terrific, but sights should be adjustable to reconfigure for you r self-defense load.

Another forum member gave me a load of 4.3 gr. Solo 1000, 200 gr. cast lead, and it is a real mild very accurate load

A lot of my fellow cowboy action shooter have tried a lot of powders looking for the softest recoil. Clays seems to be the best. Same velocity from different powders and believe it or not some powder have different recoil. Again, I love clays and shoot it in everything from 38 special to 44 mag.

200 gr or 180 gr lead bullets with 6.6-7.0gr of Unique. It's fairly mild but still feels like a 44.
