Factory Targets let the trigger guard smack my middle knuckle pretty good.Magnas the open back strap/frame hump really pound the web of my hand.Between the 2 I'd prefer a covered back strap.I guess I'm going to try some "Goodyears".

Rubber grips are best for recoil control, but I like wood. Must be an old guy thing. Anyway, my 29-3 started out with these...

... but forum member VM took a set of target stocks and made these...

This set of grips are shorter and more narrow than factory targets and really let me get a hold on the 44. Factory N frame targets are to big for me and VM made these that are just like Goldielocks porage. Just right.

I much prefer the appearance of wood but I'm much more comfortable shooting rubber grips. For me, that means Uncle Mike's when I can find 'em and, if not, Hogues.

I'm VERY MUCH a Pachmayr grip man. I prefer the Pachmayr Decelerator grips for the large frame revolvers (and the "K" frames) and the compacs for "J" frames.

Takes a LOT of the bite out of heavy loads.

I've found that Badger grips are just as good or better at taming the recoil as rubber grips are. I have a set on my M640-1 and I find the recoil easily controllable and comfortable even with the hottest Magnum ammo.

Sir, FWIW, for magnums bigger than .357, I prefer Pachmayrs that cover the backstrap.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

Being that I am very "old school" myself,

I'll put in a plug for Herrett Trooper or Shooting Star grips- custom fit to order.

Send in a drawing of your hand, and they send you back a beautiful set of grips!

If you want to show it off, go with wood.

If you want to shoot it, go with rubber

Whatever is in somebody elses' hands... I long ago, lost the desire for Stout Mag loads. I'm more into "regular comfortable loads" and even then, when I'm shooting them I like my revolvers, and 1911s for that matter, to be wearing Hogue finger groove "goodyears"...

I think you're on the right track. The covered backstrap will probably get your knuckle away from the trigger guard. And in rubber, it will cushion the force of the backstrap a bit.

Good luck!

I prefer wood but have some rubber hogues. I find that a good golf or batting glove helps protect my middle finger a lot. These gloves are soft so they give good feel and they grab the wood grip enough to stop the slippage of your hand during recoil and that extra layer of material gives just enough padding that neither my finger or hand web take a beating.

"Coke" shaped target grips seem to fit best and work best for me.

Harrett's Jordan Trooper stocks handle heavy magnum recoil better than anything else I have ever used- and I think I've tried just about every configuration.
